G2010 - How’s the 2022 season going?

I don’t see the problem. If a kid is on scholarship that means she/he is an elite prospect. That same prospect could draw scouts to your team and get other kids noticed. Kids that need the free ride or not shouldn’t have to pay if they’re so talented that being there is a direct cause of wins and exposure for your team. That same kid can be a draw for recruiting as well. I understand if the scholarship player is taking mins from kids further down the roster but you gotta take the good with the bad.

I say this as a club fee paying parent. I’ve been hit with the “you’re late on your monthly payment” many times lol the soccer struggles are real.
The scholarship players I've seen arent any better or worse than other players whos parents actually are paying.

If a scholarship player was that much better than everyone else then maybe. I haven't seen that, what I have seen is players from other clubs being lured away with free soccer. Basically coaches looking to shortcut development by stealing from others that actually are developing players.

I guess we’ll just have to see. If this player was causing chemistry issues then things should be fixed but looking at their roster on the ecnl app and it seems to be #18 that is missing. I think she was the center attacking mid. That’s a very important player. I hope they have the right player to replace that piece since that is the playmaker and responsible for assisting the forwards. One of the most important players on a team. Could make or break a team if the wrong person plays that position.
Yes, #18, the center attacking mid is the player who left Blue to Slammers Koge.

There's no such thing as an elite prospect for any sport at U13. Who are you trying to fool?

You show me 1 player whos getting a free ride at 13 and ill show you 5, just as good if not better.

NCAA begs to differ with you.

There are elite U13 prospects, and NCAA had to change the rules to keep colleges from signing them while they are still in middle school.

Sit this one out? Weather is horrible for Spring break. The Blues will be find. When I was roaming the Ranch way back, let me tell you about the good players I saw every night. Olivia, Alyssa, Simone, Trinity, Sophie, Josie, Reilyn, Riley, Julie, Ella and so many more. Don't you guys have a open pool policy for all the best of the best around the West Coast? You guys at Surf offer full rides, right? Legends, Slammers and the rest of the best also offer free play and travel and these top clubs know how to recruit when it counts. Blues does not offer anything free unless your dirt poor and at around this age, the deals for free rides comes knocking on the Blues players and that is why mass exodus occurs. My dd was offered free from 4 of the 6 top clubs in Socal because we were promised free soccer in the GDA for the best of the best, just like the boys.
Some soccer scholarships at Surf, but most pay to play at Surf.

Is it based on poverty & financial mistakes dad made in life and need based for past screw ups in life or can a "cheapo" dad get a free handout if he ask for one? I remember a time when my dd got a "free handout" in exchange for her goals, tough attitude and never say die attitude and then some GM Papi starting spreading shit & some 50/50 half & half truths about how poor I was, truly super poor dude and was out to make crush look like a "cheapo" or "cheapskate" father who acts poor only get the free soccer and then parties up on the road with steaks and unlimited drinks that one of the rich dads picks up for me. Not my fault. I saw those looks at the bar when folks thought I was a big bum of a dad and just a poor loser looking for those free goodies in youth soccer. Talk about looking in the dumpster for free stuff. I was the biggest cover up ever in youth soccer bro. A heads up: As the dd gets older and those B and C players grow, get faster and go all in soccer, then it becomes tougher to find the field. Warm sun is coming Friday. I'm going to the beach cave brother. Secret spot with a nice left and a killer salt water pool.

I can say Shaw, Thompson and Olivia were all Elite when I saw them play when they were 12. OM got a NC deal when she was 11. Thompson was #1 pick and now pro at 18 and skipped Stanford. Shaw signed with the SD Wave and we all know OM signed pro. A 15 year just broke her record with the Wave I heard. The game is going Pro like I always said it would. Class of 2023 top players went pro. Also watched Rodman, Jackson & Turner when they were 12 and they are still Elite. You can see it with your eyes.

The comment you are referring to is just someone expressing how they feel and a bit ignorant. We could list many players who were elite at U13. Lets start with most of the men and women on the national team. If they have the skill, vision, decision making and athleticism when they are 12, they most likely will be an elite player, if they maintain the love of the game and don't get injured. No guarantees, but if you mean by elite that they are top college talent or professional, yes you can. However, note my conditions. Many elite kids lose interest. Many get injured. My criteria for future elite is to look at body type, athleticism and coordination and then work ethic and ability to learn. That being said, there is always a Clint Dempsey or Alexi Lalas that started late to go on to elite status.

I was speaking hypothetically but ok, I’ll play along. Olivia Moutrie at 13, not sure if they took a scholarship but that’s an example of an elite prospect, I’d have no problem with her playing for free. Tell me 5 that were just as good or better than her. Where are they now?

Question, if elite U14 prospects don’t exist, how do these prospects magically appear at U15 for usynt? If you think there’s no such thing then you’re fooling yourself. Again I’m a club fee paying mofo so my kid is definitely not on scholarship but I wouldn’t have a problem if another kid took the free ride either. If I had a problem, I’d leave the club. Not make ridiculous demands lol. That’s just me tho.

To clarify. I said U13 not U14. 12 year old girls.

Why would any club at 12 years old hand out a free ride for anything more then financial assistance? More specifically a 12 year old girl whos body could go to complete shit in 2 years. You would be paying for leftover size and speed from the prior 2 years at this point. Unless we're talking about a Female gymnast who peaks by 16 you got a great argument.

For boys that needle moves even further because everything can change between the age of 18-20. A club or schools ROI is much greater with boys than girls. Again dont get ahead of yourself. I'm posting this under a G2010 section. So only think 12 y/o girls for a minute and the current landscape of DA,ECNL,ECRL. OM proved her self playing with older boys and girls. Playing 3 years up at times. Do any of the top girls SoCal teams have a 9 year old playing ECNL right now or a 12 year old girl playing 3 years up on a boys MLS team? Elite and 12y/o girls is just comical to me. I'm sorry if I've hurt daddies feelings but just look at your DD and what she's going through on a daily basis becoming a women. The odds are stacked in the favor of the house for things to fail at this age.

So yes. Across the board right now at 12. You show me one girl at this age who's getting a full ride and probably every poster on here since soccer's subjective could argue 5 better or more deserving players of that free money. This is why teams and clubs need transparency. Who's paying and who's not. More importantly where's that money coming from. Transparency alone would clear up arguments about playing time and position. The systems broken and needs to be fixed.

My kid is a U14, 2010 so my response was based on that premise.

Your stance seems more tied to playing time rather than scholarship/free play or elite prospects. Say the club was transparent and all the new kids are paying… what would your argument be, If the new kids are taking playing time from original kids…“We have seniority” or “their parents aren’t in our circle of friends”

If soccer is subjective then so are the opinions of parents regarding who is an “elite prospect” deserving of a free ride. Socal youth soccer is a business, take your business elsewhere if you’re not happy with the product. Just my opinion.

Sorry about the premature send. I was going to give you a couple of examples to show making absolute statements is dangerous. First example from Surf experience is the following on Catarina Macario cut and paste from an article article: (who might eventually be considered the best female player in the world and certainly got a scholarship.

"In her first year in the US, at the age of 12 years old, Catarina was selected for the U14 National Team. In the year of 2013, she was chosen by IMG Academy the #1 player in the Nation of the Class of 2017. Currently, she plays Varsity for Torrey Pines High School as a freshman. Her scoring average is still high and she is flourishing in Southern California.

What does her youth soccer club think?

San Diego Surf SCs Director of Coaching Colin Chesters said, “Catarina is the best goal scoring forward ever to wear a Surf SC uniform. Her ability to take control of a game through her instincts in front of goal is unbelievable. We are proud she is at our club.”

Second, more recent example is Melanie Barcenas. By the way, 12 years old was just 3 years ago....just sayin
San Diego Wave FC Signs 15-Year-Old Local Forward Melanie Barcenas!
"We knew this day was coming for Mel since the day she started at Surf on our U7 team. We are BEYOND proud of Mel’s tenacity in chasing her dreams, relentless hard work, and the fire she brings to every field."

There are others, but I will agree, 12 years old is early to judge the future greatness. But giving great, truly great 12 year old soccer players a scholarships is actually not a bad business decision because teams recruit and build around these kind of players, and like it or not, this is a business.
