In collaboration with TECH we put together a synopsis on all the G06 teams competing in Presidents Cup. Please take in mind these are our observations of teams we have seen play over the course of the last year.
A1 SD Surf EGSL Academy 2006 (YSR-CS #3)-One of the most difficult teams out there to beat and considered one of the favorites to take State Cup. CB has this team playing a controlled and possession like game. Surf can easily move the ball around with fluidity and pull defenses apart allowing for well-developed offensive attacks. Their recent form at Surf Thanks Giving was impressive, but at the TOC they fell short to a team they handled previously.
A2 LAGSD G06 Premier-Eckerlin (YSR-CS #21)-Galaxy SD can always be counted on to have a competitive team in every age group, but the true measure of their potential against the bigs always has to be measured outside of league play for the younger age groups as sometimes their league performance can be deceiving. In this case Galaxy SD didn’t fare well in either. They had a decent build going into league with some eye opening wins at both Surf and Blues Cup. League turned out to be a roller coaster and they ended a bit on the down side at Surf Thanksgiving. The build up to State will be critical for this team to challenge for a ticket out of group
A3 Murrieta Surf G06 White (YSR-CS #35)-This team is not afraid to take on tough competition and certainly gave a few teams in SCDSL (south) a difficult time. Don’t let their record fool you, this team may ultimately be in over their heads against the top 20 but they’re a fringe team that is highly motivated. Coach Garcia is an animated character that has the knack to get the most out of his teams in a “nothing to lose” situation. Outside of SD Surf, this group doesn’t have a definitive #2 favorite. Murrieta has just a good of chance when comparing them to Galaxy SD and FRAM, both of which had a softer schedule during league play.
A4 FRAM G06-Aguinaldo (YSR-CS #20)- FRAM have a very impressive CSL record with a myriad of goals. Not to mention making a nice run at the CUP and falling just short to Eagles. They are led by clever and attacking midfielder who will do all she can to bring out the best in everyone. But what will FRAM do in the next round? They do not have a great track record when playing out of their own league. We will see!
B1 So Cal Blues - 2006 Rennie – Mulligan (YSR-CS #8)- This is an athletic and aggressive team that comes at their opponents with fervor. A tough team to play and accustomed to playing the toughest competition. However, one may question their consistency and level of play. At times they seem to not rise to the occasion and other times they do. Despite this they certainly are one of the two favorites in this group. But, will it be 1st or 2nd?
B2 West Coast FC G06 Swanson (YSR-CS #16)- DS has this team playing a nice brand of futbol. They build out of the back and move the ball forward with purpose and with control. They have some accomplished skilled players who can compete and make a run out of the group, however they will have to play their best.
B3 Select Cities SC G06 (YSR-CS #85)-A lot has been said about teams that choose to play at different levels come State / National Cup and I think if you’re honest with yourself and put “commendable” aside, it would have been acceptable for SCSC to drop down to Governors after finishing last in Silver North and failing to win a game this season. They more than qualify for an appeal and after taking a look at this bracket, I can only hope that they put together a Cinderella run and the girls can finish this season on a positive note.
B4 Beach FC SB G06 Milner (YSR-CS #14)- Beach plays a tactically smart game and don’t quit. They have a collective of talented players and some great results in making the finals in tournaments. Certainly a contender to make the next round, but more than likely will come down to the result against Blues for the coveted first slot. None the less don’t be surprised if they pull off a big win deep into the tourney.
C1 Albion SC G06 Academy ((YSR-CS #5)- MW has this team in great form. They have continually improved over the course of the year. This team plays an organized game with skill. And have a few players that are difference makers. More than likely take the group, but I am sure CCU will have some something to say about that.
C2 SLOSC Storm G06 U11 (YSR-CS #76)- *C2 SLOSC Storm G06 U11 (YSR-CS #74)- San Luis Obispo gave up a lot of goals this season in a top heavy Silver North CSL bracket where they sat mid table with everyone else trying to not get blown out by SoCal Academy and Eagles. Although they won the Juventus Coppa against some Cal North squads, the level of competition pales in comparison to what they’ll see against both Albion and SoCal Academy, both favored in this group.
C3 Slammers FC G2006 (YSR-CS #31)- *C3 Slammers FC G2006 (YSR-CS #32)- Slammers hasn’t been known for their younger squads and traditionally they tend to be that team that is competitive and will get there eventually. Same can be true of this squad, and in another grouping they might carry more weight as a dark horse. With the build up to State Cup it will be interesting if the “winds of change” affect this team.
C4 CCU SoCal Academy G2006 (YSR-CS #10)-CCU took first in CSL over Eagles and will certainly make an impression when playing top competition. They will battle Albion for the pole position. This team plays with energy, hard, and fast. They are very good about getting behind the defense (on sides of course) with their wingers. And can quickly put in a few goals. With an appearance in the finals at TOC they can certainly be an outside contender.
D1 Strikers FC-OC EGSL 2006 (YSR-CS #4)- This side is well coached and talented. One of the teams that can make a deep run. This group plays a systematic game and really understand what to do. Strikers are quite use to playing some of the best and give team fits. This may well be the most difficult group and will have to fight to get out. But how will they play without PA? My guess is that they will be fine and make PA proud.
D2 Laguna United FC-G2006-Blue (YSR-CS #65)-Laguna has their work cut out for them as they’re essentially throwing themselves into the big ring with very little experience against that type of competition. They fared well against Flight II competition this season but their biggest win, 1-0 over Blues Otto, was a long time ago in August and eventually avenged as they fell 3-1 to Blues Otto in league play.
D3 Real So Cal G06 White (YSR-CS #15)-RSC is a difficult bunch to play. They are very organized and will not walk away quietly. They defend as a unit and counter attack nicely. Their keeper makes scoring against them difficult and have a talented winger/mid who can scorch defenses. They have beaten a few of the top teams and will definitely fight for a place in the next round.
D4 Eagles Soccer Club - G2006 (YSR-CS #18)-Eagles are always up for challenge and are in for another. As previously mentioned possibly playing in the most difficult group will be a test. Coach Kelly is one of the best in the youngers and his teams always show up in the big moments, ultimately Eagles is going to have to go through RSC to punch their ticket into the next round.
Groups E-H on the next response to the thread.
