2017 Cal South State Cup

The fields at Galway Downs were very well maintained this season for both CSL and SCDSL league play. Not a bad draw at all for group play, can't say the same for the Sweet 16 and Elite 8 that will be played at Ryan Park. It's hit or miss there, always a coin flip to see how well kept they'll be. Semi-Finals / Finals at Silverlakes will be a blast!

Good luck to all!

For those of you looking for lodging at Galway Downs, Galway Downs has about 10 to 11 Deluxe RV Spaces with full hookups (water, electricity and sewer). They are working with a few RV rental providers to provide RV's for families that don't have an RV and want to stay on property for State Cup weekends.

RV Sites run $85/night (2 night minimum) so $170.00. The Deluxe RV Sites overlook the Polo 1 field. You contact Robert Kellerhouse at Galway Downs to rent sites (robertk@galwaydowns.com).

You can also rent an RV and site for $500 (all inclusive - includes RV, site rental fee, taxes, etc.) from http://www.mcgowanfamilyrvrental.com/ (a private party) who will have a site for at least the first few weekends (his RV is new and very nice inside). Ron McGowan will have the RV all set up for you, you just bring linens and your food. You contact Ron at 951-712-0115.

Code 4 RV is also a preferred provider to Galway Downs and there is a deal in the works where you can rent from Code 4 as well.

Lodging in Temecula fills up really fast because of the wineries, so don't wait to make reservations if you intend to stay in town or on property at Galway Downs.

Surprised to see that Strikers Ayala isn't in the Presidents division.

I'm not--- they've been bagging all year. Haven't played a decent team yet. That's Coach Ayala and the Manager's M.O.--- beat up on inferior opponents to make themselves feel good. It's a disservice to their players, many who are very talented.

They'd get crushed in Presidents and won't last long in Governors. Untested, they'll fold under the slightest adversity.

In collaboration with TECH we put together a synopsis on all the G06 teams competing in Presidents Cup. Please take in mind these are our observations of teams we have seen play over the course of the last year.

A1 SD Surf EGSL Academy 2006 (YSR-CS #3)-One of the most difficult teams out there to beat and considered one of the favorites to take State Cup. CB has this team playing a controlled and possession like game. Surf can easily move the ball around with fluidity and pull defenses apart allowing for well-developed offensive attacks. Their recent form at Surf Thanks Giving was impressive, but at the TOC they fell short to a team they handled previously.

A2 LAGSD G06 Premier-Eckerlin (YSR-CS #21)-Galaxy SD can always be counted on to have a competitive team in every age group, but the true measure of their potential against the bigs always has to be measured outside of league play for the younger age groups as sometimes their league performance can be deceiving. In this case Galaxy SD didn’t fare well in either. They had a decent build going into league with some eye opening wins at both Surf and Blues Cup. League turned out to be a roller coaster and they ended a bit on the down side at Surf Thanksgiving. The build up to State will be critical for this team to challenge for a ticket out of group

A3 Murrieta Surf G06 White (YSR-CS #35)-This team is not afraid to take on tough competition and certainly gave a few teams in SCDSL (south) a difficult time. Don’t let their record fool you, this team may ultimately be in over their heads against the top 20 but they’re a fringe team that is highly motivated. Coach Garcia is an animated character that has the knack to get the most out of his teams in a “nothing to lose” situation. Outside of SD Surf, this group doesn’t have a definitive #2 favorite. Murrieta has just a good of chance when comparing them to Galaxy SD and FRAM, both of which had a softer schedule during league play.

A4 FRAM G06-Aguinaldo (YSR-CS #20)- FRAM have a very impressive CSL record with a myriad of goals. Not to mention making a nice run at the CUP and falling just short to Eagles. They are led by clever and attacking midfielder who will do all she can to bring out the best in everyone. But what will FRAM do in the next round? They do not have a great track record when playing out of their own league. We will see!

B1 So Cal Blues - 2006 Rennie – Mulligan (YSR-CS #8)- This is an athletic and aggressive team that comes at their opponents with fervor. A tough team to play and accustomed to playing the toughest competition. However, one may question their consistency and level of play. At times they seem to not rise to the occasion and other times they do. Despite this they certainly are one of the two favorites in this group. But, will it be 1st or 2nd?

B2 West Coast FC G06 Swanson (YSR-CS #16)- DS has this team playing a nice brand of futbol. They build out of the back and move the ball forward with purpose and with control. They have some accomplished skilled players who can compete and make a run out of the group, however they will have to play their best.

B3 Select Cities SC G06 (YSR-CS #85)-A lot has been said about teams that choose to play at different levels come State / National Cup and I think if you’re honest with yourself and put “commendable” aside, it would have been acceptable for SCSC to drop down to Governors after finishing last in Silver North and failing to win a game this season. They more than qualify for an appeal and after taking a look at this bracket, I can only hope that they put together a Cinderella run and the girls can finish this season on a positive note.

B4 Beach FC SB G06 Milner (YSR-CS #14)- Beach plays a tactically smart game and don’t quit. They have a collective of talented players and some great results in making the finals in tournaments. Certainly a contender to make the next round, but more than likely will come down to the result against Blues for the coveted first slot. None the less don’t be surprised if they pull off a big win deep into the tourney.

C1 Albion SC G06 Academy ((YSR-CS #5)- MW has this team in great form. They have continually improved over the course of the year. This team plays an organized game with skill. And have a few players that are difference makers. More than likely take the group, but I am sure CCU will have some something to say about that.

C2 SLOSC Storm G06 U11 (YSR-CS #76)- *C2 SLOSC Storm G06 U11 (YSR-CS #74)- San Luis Obispo gave up a lot of goals this season in a top heavy Silver North CSL bracket where they sat mid table with everyone else trying to not get blown out by SoCal Academy and Eagles. Although they won the Juventus Coppa against some Cal North squads, the level of competition pales in comparison to what they’ll see against both Albion and SoCal Academy, both favored in this group.

C3 Slammers FC G2006 (YSR-CS #31)- *C3 Slammers FC G2006 (YSR-CS #32)- Slammers hasn’t been known for their younger squads and traditionally they tend to be that team that is competitive and will get there eventually. Same can be true of this squad, and in another grouping they might carry more weight as a dark horse. With the build up to State Cup it will be interesting if the “winds of change” affect this team.

C4 CCU SoCal Academy G2006 (YSR-CS #10)-CCU took first in CSL over Eagles and will certainly make an impression when playing top competition. They will battle Albion for the pole position. This team plays with energy, hard, and fast. They are very good about getting behind the defense (on sides of course) with their wingers. And can quickly put in a few goals. With an appearance in the finals at TOC they can certainly be an outside contender.

D1 Strikers FC-OC EGSL 2006 (YSR-CS #4)- This side is well coached and talented. One of the teams that can make a deep run. This group plays a systematic game and really understand what to do. Strikers are quite use to playing some of the best and give team fits. This may well be the most difficult group and will have to fight to get out. But how will they play without PA? My guess is that they will be fine and make PA proud.

D2 Laguna United FC-G2006-Blue (YSR-CS #65)-Laguna has their work cut out for them as they’re essentially throwing themselves into the big ring with very little experience against that type of competition. They fared well against Flight II competition this season but their biggest win, 1-0 over Blues Otto, was a long time ago in August and eventually avenged as they fell 3-1 to Blues Otto in league play.

D3 Real So Cal G06 White (YSR-CS #15)-RSC is a difficult bunch to play. They are very organized and will not walk away quietly. They defend as a unit and counter attack nicely. Their keeper makes scoring against them difficult and have a talented winger/mid who can scorch defenses. They have beaten a few of the top teams and will definitely fight for a place in the next round.

D4 Eagles Soccer Club - G2006 (YSR-CS #18)-Eagles are always up for challenge and are in for another. As previously mentioned possibly playing in the most difficult group will be a test. Coach Kelly is one of the best in the youngers and his teams always show up in the big moments, ultimately Eagles is going to have to go through RSC to punch their ticket into the next round.

Groups E-H on the next response to the thread.

-Part 2-

E1 Anaheim Surf - G2006 Whitfield (YSR-CS #1)- Another favorite to take State Cup. They can be quite explosive when attacking. You cannot let your guard down with this squad as they will not. They will press and play with pace. Their ability to force teams to error is an area they will capitalize on. It is certain they will look to their forward/winger up top to scream past defenses to put a number of goals in the back of the net.

E2 So Cal Blues - 2006 Holley (YSR-CS #11)- As with any Blues team they come out to play. They have played some big games and have come out victorious. They could play spoiler to Anaheim but realistically challenge for the second spot in this group. The question here is do they have enough for the next round?

E3 Beach FC SB G06 DiGenova (YSR-CS #30)- This crew is a solid bunch who play together well and do some nice things out on the pitch. They are a very active team that moves well off the ball. They are in another tough group and will have to play lights out to move on.

E4 San Diego SC G2006 Navy (YSR-CS #19)- A very athletic team that plays aggressively and will not relent. These characteristics have proven to be very effective for this team with positive league results and when playing against tough competition. SDSC is led by a powerful and skilled certain midfielder who controls the midfield quite nicely. They will also battle for that second spot.

F1 LAGSB 2006 Elite 1 (YSR-CS #6)- It has taken some time but like Albion have improved greatly over the year. DS has this team playing a possession style game win or lose. This collective of players has also found some consistency of play and are gelling quite nicely. Will definitely have to fight their way out of this solid group.

F2 FC Golden State - 2006 PDA (YSR-CS #27)- Carlos Guerrero has the reputation where he can start up a brand new team and put them on the map. His work with Lazers / Arsenal / Legends made his girls National Champions and propelled him to FCGS with a much bigger role. With a solid group of girls, he has helped put together a squad that is on a trajectory to go from outside looking in to solidifying themselves as a top 20 team over the course of the next season or two. CSL has been perfect for this team as its allowed them to work on the style of play Guerrero employs and they continuously chase the competition at the big events to measure themselves and keep pace. They’re very much an upstart squad like Strikers North, with a little bit less grit and more finesse.

F3 Strikers FC North G06 Red SM (YSR-CS #13)- One of those teams that does not quit. They have a well-organized defense and keeper that likes to deny goal scoring opportunities. They have given some perennial favorites a bit of a shock. They play with vigor and bit of a shock. They play with vigor and a nothing to lose attitude that can frustrate even the most dominant teams. This was never more evident than recently at TOC where SD Surf dominated them for all but 5 minutes of the game but Strikers never broke and came away with the win in PKs where their keeper can be a factor in their favor. This is exactly the type of team you do not want to face in the knockout round, where style points are worthless.

F4 Rebels Soccer Club - G06 Gold (YSR-CS #17)- Rebels is the kind of team you want to play, regardless of style ala direct or possession, they will let you play. A very technical squad that minds their ball control and spacing on the field, Gabe’s girls will be ready to play and play well. Quite often their opponent’s style of play dictates just how well they do and I think in Group F, Rebels will have a shot at advancing. The game against Galaxy may very well be a must watch game where coaches display just how kids this young can play a very intelligent game while being some of the most competitive teams in SoCal. Key game for Rebels to advance will definitely be the match up against Strikers North, a huge contrast in styles, winner will have to dictate their style over the other.

G1 Beach FC LB G06 R.Perez (YSR-CS #7)- Without a doubt a very strong and competitive team to play. When you think they’re out of it they find a way back. This team is filled with a core group that have pace and are tenacious. They like many other squads have played some of the strongest opposition around and will step it up for State Cup. More than likely the group favorites here and can realistically make a run at the title.

G2 South Valley SC G06 Gore (YSR-CS #41) South Valley finished a distant 3rd in league, something that doesn’t happen often unless you’re playing behind SoCal Academy and Eagles who ran through league like no one’s business. Despite that, they showed both growth and composure in their run during League Cup, falling to Eagles in the Quarter Finals. In a grouping that favors Beach and CDA Slammers, I think SVSC has enough of the same moxie to hang with both of the group favorites, question is can they steal one and shake this group up?

G3 SD Surf Academy Girls Brookfield 2006 (YSR-CS #25) - Surf II was all over the map this year with close competitive games against FCGS (1-0), CDA Slammers (2-3), Albion (0-1), Rebels (1-1), and Beach FC (0-1) to name a few. They were in what many consider to be one the tougher league draws in some time and they took their lumps. They will need to capitalize on their opportunity because I have a feeling Group G may be tighter than most think.

G4 CDA Slammers FC - Cerritos G06 Salazar EGSL (YSR-CS #12)- This group is very aggressive and will use pressure to force their opponents to make errors. They are lively around the field and make it hard for their competition to execute their game plan. They can competitively run with the top teams and have beaten a few of them. This squad has an excellent chance of making the next round.

H1 Legends FC G06 FC- (YSR-CS #2)- ME from the beginning has made this team a true contender in every competition they take part in. They have several talented players flying around the field that wreak havoc on their opponents. This is one of the best Legends teams many have seen in a few years at the Youngers age group. They play effective futbol and are a dangerous opponent. Expect to see them making a run for the title.

H2 CZ Elite Soccer G06 Cherif (YSR-CS #29)- CZ has found himself an athletic core of players. They are fast and will utilize their abilities to the fullest. They can make a case for themselves moving into the next round if they can find consistency in their play.

H3 Hotspurs USA - G2006 Premier (YSR-CS #26) – Hotspurs draws two very familiar opponents in Legends and CZ, both teams they faced at West Coast this season. Some time has passed and Hotspurs had a decent run in league and at Surf Thanksgiving. They will have a strong chance to advance along and will have to get past CZ in order to do so.

H4 N.V.S.C. Breakaway G-06 (YSR-CS #53)- Breakaway has had some sharp young squads the past few seasons and this team is no exception. Through league play they’re experience was limited considering the plethora of teams SoCal has to offer. They certainly attempted to address it and traveled to Nomads for Thanksgiving and TOC in December. The results may not have been what they wanted but they saw some different looks that will help them in this group where #2-4 isn’t that far apart on paper.

Wow, very impressive analysis. IMHO, SD Surf, Albion, Anaheim Surf and Legends are the four favorites to make the semis, and I'd expect one of them to win it all. Beach Perez and LAGSB are probably #5 and #6 on my list to crash the party. There are a few other teams that I think have a shot at beating those teams on any given day (Blues Rennie, CCU, Strikers OC and Strikers North all come to mind), but I'd be surprised if any of these other teams were able to put together a run all the way to a title (unless there has been some significant player movement).

Good luck to all!

Thank you Lastman14 and Tech! Great job, My daughter plays for Strikers FC North and is thankful for the kind words. This will be our first time playing in the presidents bracket we are excited to see the best teams from SoCal. We are very happy not to be in Lancaster so should be nothing but fun You can follow her on Instagram @soccerkeeper1310

I don't know the coach or manager personally but I can say in our experience with Strikers North you have to earn your flight 1 status. We as a team Strikers North SM came out of rec undefeated we then went flight 3 undefeated, flight 2 undefeated and finally flight 1 where we lost our first 2 games in regular season play in three years. Are we sand bagging? I don't think so. I don't know what team you are with or club but maybe some flight 2 teams should have stayed flight 3? The Ayala team is new to Strikers North and built a new team for the 2016-2017 season and probably exceeded expectations but I'm not sure that's sand bagging. I think these girls have worked hard all year and deserve to be applauded for having a successful year in flight 2 as they are a new team and if you are correct in saying they would get smashed on in presidents bracket then they are where they should be.I'm sure they will be flight 1 next season so wish them luck as I don't know them personally you might have more insight but maybe they just had a good year and trained hard. Good luck to everyone at State have fun!
