The problem is that soccer is not a revenue sport so most college soccer players are paying their own way. Most have no intention of even playing pro soccer. They just want to get their degree.

Now they want to make college soccer full year like like the pro but make them play for free?

Seems burdensome.

The Foreign players issue just highlights how screwed up college soccer is. Coaches are playing for wins to keep their jobs only. Rules have been bent to to give coaches what they want which is disposable players.

I think getting a free education is worth it. Even the football players get their degree or are very close to getting it. To be honest every pro-sports league should use college as its minor league.

The college soccer system is a joke in the springtime. Allowing six dates for competition. European academies must laugh at 6 dates of play during the spring school semester. How can any developmet, continuity, etc… occur over six dates? Internationally, the training schedule is year round and the men’s/women’s college programs are way behind and need to change their ways yesterday.

Many schools play two games on those dates giving 10-12 games in the spring.

Social Media followers.... Otherwise it makes no sense. Unless you think you will turn into Alex Morgan but then again why not just do that in college and then have the education to fall back on. I will never understand the 14 year old girls going into the pro's. I mean they are forgoing all school. Some have never been to a day of regular school in their lives. To me that's just sad and the parents should be ashamed of themselves.

MLS already has all the players they want/need. They have their MLS roster, their reserves in MLS Next Pro, affiliations with USL teams, and MLS academies. If you add it all up, they have 100+ players in their direct ecosystem. While they are always looking at/for players, they don't need another layer, i.e. college. They certainly don't need to pay for it or commit to it.

Going to school and pursuing pro soccer are not mutually exclusive. The teenagers signing with NWSL are being home schooled, aka taking HS online. There is no barrier to them transitioning from that to college online while they pursue their soccer "dream".

If they are smart, they can also build a social media following and earn a LOT of money that way too.

I agree with you.

However if college was structured correctly with the right rules 2nd or 3rd level pro leagues could be swapped out in favor of college leagues. Its Free! All MLS, USL, NWSL need to do is provide leadership, guidance, and a definition of standards to college programs and coaches.

I think its trying to make college something its not. Its also definitely not free. Football and basketball can at least pay for themselves. Soccer will never pay for itself and why should the public, via public schools, subsidize the MLS, a closed league owned by a variety of billionaires. That's insane.

Less than 40% of 18-22 year olds are in college. That's the age group that would be pertinent here. Those that want to, and can play soccer to a high level, can currently play in a variety of leagues in the soccer pyramid, and they don't need to attend a college to do it OR they can also attend college while they do it. I know kids in college and also playing in the UPSL. They are still chasing the dream but also getting their education.

Its free to MLS USL + NWSL.

But yes not free to the taxpayer or college student.

I guess i just view college anything as a training ground for gaining some kind of skill you can use professionally.

About 6% of college students are also college athletes. About 2% of those athletes go pro. So you are talking about something like 0.12% of college students total. That's for all sports.

Fwiw, I think all college sports should be club or intramural. Scholarships should be needs or academic only. If major sporting orgs or the AOC want farm leagues or whatever, then they should organize them and pay for them.

Some schools play 3 games on those dates. They could play for 12 hours straight on those dates. It’s still a joke with college programs limited to 6 dates in the springtime. Compare that to a European academy and it’s plainly visible why college players do not transition well to MLS/NWSL Or European lower level clubs.

I see and know many former college soccer players that coach 3 or more teams for major youth soccer clubs. Some are club directors. Nothing wrong with this.
But if a 14-15 year old home schooled teenager, decides to go pro in the NWSL, after a 5-8 year career with a HS equivalent GD, they are very likely to become a club soccer coach. That’s what they know and love.
The Alex Morgan’s who parlay it into something more are unicorns. Heck, Julie Foudy turned into color commentary. Good on her.
