Do you then fill up in Mammoth Lakes for the return trip?

I used to fill up in Bishop even with the meter reading more than 1/4 tank (my usual refill time on long trips) at Safeway or the Indian Reservation. That would give me enough to make it up the hill, drive around for a week, and still be able to make it back down to Owens Valley without buying higher-priced fuel in ML. With the winds in the right direction. I could make it back to the Reservation gas station at Fort Independence.

No way. Overpriced up there vs. down in Bishop. But I'll track prices on the way up in Lone Pine, Big Pine, and Bishop and stop on the way home where it's cheapest. I really don't need to stop but I'd never go on a trip that long without a full tank. Around town I usually fill back up
at 3/4 tank. It doesn't feel like such a bad hit on my wallet.

I pretty much only get my diesel fuel at Sam's Club unless I'm on the road. Then I pay cash. All other cars either get fuel from Costco or
Sam's Club. Too many gas stations out there with skimmers on the machines. I've never (knock on wood) had my card pinched from either
of these places. And even on the road a Costco or Sam's Club is never hard to find. Except on the way to Mammoth. Lol
