What would you do?

Keeper is a unique case. There's only ever going to be one on the field. The only way one gets to play is if the other one (and any other contenders) sits. All of the political and every other type of drama you can imagine can go into who is on the HS (or club, or semi-pro, or pretty much anywhere) team. Field player is different, with 10 spots available at all times. It's much easier for talent to eventually triumph over all of the other factors that go into a coach's choices - and much harder for coaches to keep inferior talent on the bench forever no matter how much bias is perceived.

Only speaking from our own experience, at my kid's HS those who didn't get much playing time on FS team usually don't play much when they get to varsity . A few of them quit HS soccer and are much happierer playing another sport.

Give flag football a try. :) Soccer players usulaly make good flag players.

" since realistically her academics will get her a scholarship in college"
Depends on where she wants to go. An 800 SAT math score might not get you into the top 20 schools where soccer can. But most those schools don't give merit money. If she is a minority there is another card to play. Otherwise, sports is likely still the best key to open doors.
My parenting opinion is keep doing it as it is a good activity.

To say "sports is likely still the best key to open doors" is giving people false hope. Realistically, how many schools are giving full scholarships? We are in the era of partial scholarships right now. Anything about 75% these days is considered a good offer.

Forget about getting a scholarship, parents have an unrealistic view on how "easy" it is to get a D1 offer. Just ask the 08's (c/o 2026) how hard it is...there are top players that have not received an offer yet and time is running out.

The whole system is being destroyed as I write. We need a better way for girls to just have fun and play soccer with options after high school if they want. The control freaks are gone and now we as parents need to help make soccer great again.

Exactly right... and every ECNL program is promising those players D1 offers.

100%. ECNL was in business to get the girls a D1 scholarship. Yes, some will take a D2 or NAIA as seniors, but the sell is always D1 to the young ballers in 8th and 9th grade.

Dang Girls HS getting a bad rap here. New to the High School game but so far varsity level has been pretty good soccer from what I've seen in South County.

My kid had the so much fun playing varsity soccer for 4 years. I had fun watching but I was always fearful of a bad injury because my child was singled out all the time. Most teams played rugby against the small school Breakers, but we stayed true and did our little best to play the triangle game and passing game against schools with 3000+ students to choose from. My dd loves to pass to her teammates and get everyone involved. HS Sports Rock!!!

Because of the 1-2 year age gap vs the Starters, the size difference will change as she continues to grow but as mentioned the style of play is more conducive to injuries and is not very pretty in HS. As her club coaches mentioned to me, HS soccer is for the biggest, strongest and fastest since it is kick and play.
I would say, if she is small, some coaches pigeon hole the small players! Unless she is in fact extremely fast! The only way small players can overcome their size, is to be really fast and aggressive.

My little baby girl was the smallest on her two championship teams. She was fast and aggressive but what she really had that set her apart was her Ganas to win and win she did. State Cup Champ. Two-time Surf Cup Champ win Surf Cup was all about crowning a real winner, not the fake three tier tournament that goes on now so the fat cats can get rich. Then she won a Natty, as the smallest player and leading scorer for Far West Regional and MVP. The goal that got her team to advance to Texas was freaking amazing. Then the cheaters and liars took over because..........

If scholarships are that important, play JUCO.
100% bro. My child had auditions in 7th and 8th grade for full ride scholarships and all she had to do was email the coach at Yale, Duke and many others that came to our practices checking out the middle school kids. All she had to do was email the coaches and then the deal would be verbal. I said, "not now, your too young." My gosh, I was attacked, made fun of and called a "dumb dad" for ruining my kids chance at the full ride. We waited and waited and then she got some real nice full ride offers in 2021 but it came with a string attached, "you must be fully jabbed or you can't come to our college for free."

I know this is tangential, but I feel approximately zero sympathy for people who miss out on opportunities because the refuse to be vaccinated against communicable diseases. And I say that as someone with a close family member who literally lost his job because he's an anti-vaxxer.

The college has an entirely valid motivation to limit the spread of communicable disease on their campus, and a justification to increase the safety for the others there. I generally support the rights of grown adults to determine what medications they wish to take, and which they do not, balancing that with public safety. However, decisions have consequences, and if you choose to be a more open vector for disease transmission where that can be minimized using safe and effective (and free, in most cases) vaccinations, then private institutions are fully within their rights to discourage you from being there.

Freedom is about being allowed to choose, and accepting the consequences of those decisions.

The fee is about $1400 for HS not including fund raisers, travel fees and some equipment. Since almost all the Starters are at a minimum ENCL -Rl level, it seems that in order to play on the HS team you would have to continue to play club at least at that level (more significant $). Thanks for your insigh

$1,400 is pretty disgusting. What travel fees does a HS have besides a bus provided for by the school? Weird. My kids play HS and realize it's mostly for the fun of playing with classmates and having a good experience. I don't know many (if any) kids playing HS for development or college recognition. I get the frustration with playing time. Some HS down here carry 20+ kids on varsity. For every happy varsity player, I can name 2-3 unhappy ones. Seems like they just have to find the right things to be invested in and if the experience isn't panning out, find something else to do. Or make the impact in training, don't wait for matches to do so. It can be tough being a younger player playing up an age level. The benefit of the doubt from a coach's perspective isn't usually in your favor.

I disagree 100% but that's ok. Big U is public, not private by the way. We can agree to disagree. It's what makes our country the best. I guess the City of Los Angeles also has valid reasons to fire the firefighters who said no to the jabs. They got fired and we saw that LA was shorthanded to fight fire and replaced with others and lost that battle big time. I read a story about one firefighter that was fired and lost everything. His wife, his job and his friends. Consequences for saying no to bioweapon is, "you're fired. Consequences of being jabbed for those who have died or been injured for fucking life also plays in this game of obey or face the consequences. The wife had valid reasons not to let the unclean enter her home and he was left with no job, no wife. Oh well, too bad sucker. Kids have no daddy at home and now the 14-year daughter is not coming home sometimes because, well dad got the boot, and these are the fucking consequences folks. Good luck everybody. A little empathy might help but to each his own. My advice and that's all it is, stay away from the jabs, their killing people and cancer is at an all-time high. Myocarditis is through the roof as is cardiac arrest.

People also have the right, arguably unfortunately, to be willfully misinformed and trust propaganda over science.

Fortunately, it's fairly easy to identify such people in today's society, via the use of certain key words and phrases, which are used almost solely within the ideological groups where misinformation is rampant and propaganda is well received. And people in those groups are currently in good company in the US at the moment (see the recent election of the fascist leaning leader of his white Christian nationalist party). People have the right to believe whatever they want, and that has certainly been exploited by some, for better or for worse.

We can agree to disagree on the veracity of science, though, for sure. :)
