All but one of the trans runners chose to make use of it. One person chose to be rude, but the rest did not.
Just putting things in perspective. A reasonable compromise worked for almost everyone.
Wouldn't it be easier if things just went back to the way they used to be. There was a male division and a female division. There were NEVER any problems. There was no need for any kind of compromise. Life was a whole lot more simple.
It was simpler, but less kind to those who see themselves as trans or non binary.
Creating a non binary category helps some people and harms no one.

Create a new division. As long as men dont get to pretend to be a woman and compete against women I am fine.
You can either play in the mens division since you are a man, or we have a new category for men who pretend to be women and you can participate in that group as well.
Problem solved.
Look at that picture of the runner, tell me it's not a man, Dad, and help me find a reasonable compromise. "Nonbinary" is a made up word. There are many things we can't relate to or identify with but that's completely unrelated to the reality of science.
Less kind? You can see yourself as anything you like. When 99.9% of the population sees you as male or female, that's the bracket you're supposed to be in. There's nothing fluid about that. Just like telling doctors they're incapable of determining male or female of a newborn and leaving the "sex" box unchecked on the birth certificate. We have enough stupidity in the human race. We can support emotional & mental illness without feeding the stupidity.

Actually, nothing. That 3rd division has been my argument all along so we agree. But the woke army will tell you there aren't enough chicks with dicks to field a league. In this case, though, that's clearly a man that was allowed to run against actual females.
