In California, there are. I believe it it ends up in the hands of a minor or a criminal in a criminal act there are fines and potential jail time if not properly secured. California apparently has 100 different gun laws, the most of any state.

Here are the inconvenient facts.

The US has give or take 50k gun deaths every year.

About half are suicide
Almost all the rest are criminal activity. Much/most of that is related gang members shooting other gang members.
ARs? Long guns of all types (shotguns, ar, bolt action, etc) are the cause of about 300 deaths a year. I bet the avid anti AR group isnt aware of that number. A tiny number compared to 50k. Anyone want to divide 300/50000 to get an idea of what percentage of guns deaths are related to long guns of any type? Nope...because that would take away a major political talking point.

The fixation on ARs is somewhat amazing. But people dont actually look at stats (masks anyone?). They just listen to the press/politicians hype an issue. Long guns of any type are not the issue. The number of deaths attributed to them in any one year is remarkably constant. They are not the issue.

The issue is and has always been gangs/criminals shooting each other, etc. They use handguns. But handguns are never going to be banned so the anti gunners go after what is perceived to be a problem and that is a scary looking gun. We dont have assault rifles either. That is a misnomer. What you and I and others are buying is NOT what the military uses. They use actual machine guns. The ARs we have just LOOK like those guns. Big difference.

What about child deaths? We see that stat used a lot. Almost all of those child/teen deaths are members of gangs. The press and they way they report it would have most believe it is some kid playing playstation at home or at 711 who got gunned down. In reality it is almost always some gang member.

Watching / reading the press one comes away with the impression it is the AR that is the issue. It isnt. Long guns of any type are about 300 deaths out of a total of 50k each year. Watching / reading the press one comes away with the impression that innocent kids are getting hammered all over the place. Reality is most of those "kids" are gang members.

The press and the politicians dont want to be called to task for failing to crack down on crime in the big cities. They dont want to be taken to task that in those cities they have failed the kids by allowing the public schools to fail to educate kids (who turn to gangs). Politicians in these cities increasingly do not want to even prosecute crimes. So you see catch and release, no bail, no criminal penalty for shoplifting under 1k. And so you see stores getting looted and the politicians dont care. The stupid defund the police movement made crime worse in the places where crime was already bad and where you have the highest gang activity.

But yeah focus on the AR that with or without it wont change a thing statisically about gun deaths. We would go from 50,000 to 49,850 at best (FBI stats do not break down in the long gun death section shotgun, vs bolt, vs semi auto).

So keep marching, keep trying to ban a gun that wont make any difference in gun death stats in the least. It is kind of like lets pretend we can stop the virus if we Mask UP!!.
