I lived it. I made mistakes but those mistakes were because of big fat liars who hid behind US Soccer, US Training Centers and the like. When a parent is told by the top scout in SD to leave one place because the US scouts said so and the dude is wearing a US Soccer logo, email, well, you listen. My dd had a little dream at 11 and I was just trying to help her and I got played and she got blacklisted. Some of these people in the youth soccer arena are ruthless liars. I never chased medals, I was just helping my dd chase her dreams. Asshats on here attacked me hard because their perceptions were 100% off because they were either jealous or just hated me and my kid. I hear US Soccer just hired someone from South Hampton and he will be in charge of the youth program. Hindsight is 20/20 so you always have experience to look back and see your mistakes. Some people make me SMFH!!!
My mom used to tell me to buy the cheapest house in the most prestigious neighborhood. That house has the most potential, but you will have to work and make it better. Some girls are more mature and can handle that pressure, but then you may have bigger issues with a child taking the wheel so to speak.
I have a healthy skepticism to most things, so I am immediately skeptical of any type of recruiting for a young girl soccer player. I'm here for the long run with a dream of my daughter getting a sport and academic scholarship to a great college. That's our dream. Women pro soccer players make as much as part time electricians, so I don't see the money/draw for promises and recruiting for young female athletes, but sure, maybe things are changing?
I may never get my dream, but along the way I have made some really damn good friends and my daughter has gained confidence and a work ethic. The byproducts of this experience outweigh what may or may not happen.
We have goals that are part of the major goal leading up to the dream and being on the top 3 teams at 11 years old is not one of them. Now, I want her to be on a team that competes with those top 3 teams, but she does not in any way have to already be on them. Peaking at 12 or 13 in your sport is exactly what we don't want.
I want her on one of those top 3 teams when she is say.......16. When she can drive and has the faculties to command her future. I see coaches talk to their players at age 11 for 10 minute or so sometimes and I see eyes looking everywhere, but him. They can't retain all that info. yet and they don't need to!
They need to play games and apply their technical training under pressure and build their skills to dominate a future position. They need to learn versatile skills and have experience playing every position imo. We dont' get that with annual contractsI and one ecnl league which really looks more like the top coaches focus on recruiting to tear other teams apart rather than to coach and build great players. We are all trapped, because we need the best competition.
I hate losing more than I like winning, but I have to learn to shut my trap and advocate for my daughter's complete development for her to eventually dominate a position against the very, very best with the potential of bad calls from refs and coaches that place her in a position at showcases or tryouts that may not be her dominant role. She must be relevant everywhere on the field imo. I see sooooo many young girls that never play defense and soooo many young girls that get locked into defense. Why are we limiting this development to make American Girls complete players?
There are tons of unnecessary shenanigans for young girl soccer imo. These girls should be playing very competitive games in different positions all the time until they are 15 or so. Then they can start getting boxed into positions and used with the purpose of representing an organization or team. More and more, I just wonder if one of the major hurdles is merely to stay in ecnl on any team and avoid injury or burnout until college? I would want her to eventually either help carry that worst house on a nice block to the best or be on one of the best at that time though. Still though, I can encourage and reward, but it's 100% up to her have the athleticism and desire when it really counts not to mention luck.
I just find it sad how hard I have to advocate and work for her to get complete game skills for every position. This is why I think we need more access to very competitive games or an ongoing league with great competition without friggen id cards or labels. I want a league where positions are rotated for all the girls and it is very convenient to sign up year round. It's another dream that will never happen though, but I would pay for this dream.

I hear ya. I helped my dd with HER dreams, not mine. Her dream was to play for the USA. I know, a big pipe dream but that's what dreams are all about. What's not to like that from a 11 year old? I wanted her to do dance, play with dolls, play house and all that girly stuff...lol. I never put her in soccer to get a deal for college and there lies the big issue we got in our country. Money does not buy you happiness and neither does a high paying job. My buddy has been divorced 3 times but has more money then most in Laguna and I mean, lot's of dollars. He got his Ph.D. as well. Today, he's on anti depressant and super unhappy. Pray for him because he's not doing good. His name is Jess, thx
