You guys are taking off in a direction that isn’t in this situation. I already stated above this guy rarely does privates. He’s doing a private for a very, very good friend of ours so I reached out asking if we could just go after that person. He doesn’t really do a lot of privates at all. It’s my son and another boy that’s ECNL that’s not on his team. So This post is taking off in a different direction. No one said privates are necessary to be on his team. He’s not doing privates with anyone on his team.
lol I know a lot of parents here have PTSD with youth soccer so they automatically assume the worst…
As stated by OP, I think it’s a natural progression and fine. Did some privates and saw enough quality in the kid to ask him to come join the trainings which is a great sign.
I’d ask the coach what he thinks. “Hey coach, what do you think? How do you think he fits with the team?” Usually a coach will give a direct answer. Even if he or she doesn’t, I think HOW they answer will give a good feel for where the kid stands in the team.
I’m going through this with my boys. For one of them, after 2 trainings, the coach grabbed me after and told me he had a starting spot. For another, I had to bring it up after a few trainings and coach said he had a spot but I can tell it’s more tepid of a response. Which makes total sense. Former is higher quality vs his peers than the latter vs his peers. Just different places in their development and natural talents.
I’d ask the coach. They’re receptive to it cause it’s tryout season. Many will give you a straight answer.
Good luck!
