I know this is hard to believe, but I think Arsenal's actual actions are even scummier than reported above.
My understanding is that Arsenal's game roster had 20 girls on it. 2 of the girls were crossed out and not active. That leaves 18 active players. For those of you who don't know, you can have a tournament roster of 22 girls and 18 active for any given game.
Of course, the 2 girls crossed out were from the Flight 1 EGSL team. They were likely just listed to meet the roster continuity requirement, but were not actually playing in the tournament.
Of the remaining 18 girls, it appears that there were 6 from the EGSL team Flight 1 team, 11 from the ECNL team, and 1 that is in question. The roster continuity rule is 9. One question is does that apply for the tournament roster or the game roster. If it applied to the game roster, I think Arsenal is clearly in violation, as they only had 6 girls, 7 max from the EGSL team..
I believe the 11 ECNL girls include the starting star forward, 3 starting midfielders, 2 starting defenders, and another defender that played significant minutes. The goalie is from the 2004 pre-ECNL team.
Basically, Arsenal has 6 girls on the active roster from the Flight 1 team. I think everyone else is ECNL. ECNL is three levels above the level of this tournament -- Flight 2, Flight 1 Europa, Flight 1 Champions, ECNL. That is like a team properly in this tournament playing in an AYSO regular season league (not even all stars -- 3 levels below is Flight 3, All Stars, Basic AYSO). Does abusing the rules so you can outscore your opponents 32-0 help anyone?
The question is why would Arsenal want to have its ECNL team play in President's Cup. It makes no sense. Was Randy afraid his ECNL girls could not stand up to Beach (any of the teams), Legends, Sharks, and a host of others in National Cup? Was he just getting ready to play Flight 2 next year since without an Academy team all of the girls that put up with him to play ECNL no longer have to? I don't think Arsenal could compete with Legends when they had the gigantic ECNL recruiting advantage. Now that Legends has the Academy advantage, I think Arsenal is in bad shape.
Speaking from experience, the girls from the teams he beat were completely demoralized after working so hard to get as far as they got. I just don't understand it. Does anyone have a reasonable explanation.
