Skiing

I can't see much through the paywall. Was he suggesting that she should have refused to race at Crans-Monatana because of the conditions, thus putting the race officials on the spot?
Yea, she wanted the spotlight early before the Olympics. He said she should have made Olympics her only focus.

I have nothing against her personally. But I agree with Tomba. Shes older and less reactive than other skiers. It means you have to work twice as hard to compete at the same level and injuries take twice as long to recover from.

Vonn is a risk taker, she doesn't have any other gear than all out. Tomba was a technical specialist and never raced downhill. There is a reason that he only did S and GS and why Vonn focuses on speed events, it's a different mentality.

She took a huge risk by choosing the line she did and it didn't payoff. She claims that her ACL had nothing to do with it and I believe her. She got bounced by the bump and got stuck in the backseat, hooking the gate.

The line she took was considerably faster. Look at Wiles run today in the Combined, she took a similar line almost got bounced and then flailed the rest of the run, but despite that had the 4th fastest downhill in the Combined.

Lots of ifs and whats.

But the fact remains that if she only focused on the Olympics she would have been more prepared and wouldnt have been skiing on an ACL issue.

Does it really matter? Not really. When you're competing at the highest levels every little thing can change the end result.

Yeah, I was just countering Tomba's ifs and whats. Hindsight is 20/20.

There has been zero evidence presented that the ACL caused the crash, only the circumstances call into question the ACL. It's the difference between causation and correlation. I'm being a bit facetious, but Vonn having an ACL was probably more of a luxury than a necessity. She had raced a number of times in the past without an ACL or other knee injuries (as have other ski racers), she compensated with muscle strength. Was she 100% while racing with those injuries? Hell no, but she was still competitive.

This is an interesting video on the crash and break. A little graphic.
