Ratemycoaches SoCalSoccer version

Let's all agree: We spend a lot of money towards this soccer stuff.

I will go first šŸ˜†

Good: Jay at Be The Game Changers. He sparked my daughter's curiosity. Ontario area.
Bad: Ily with Next Level in Laverne. Biggest scam artist I have ever seen.

Are talking about actual Coaches for teams? The two you mentioned look to be trainers.

Glad to hear your child found someone that they connect to. Ily with Next Level has been absolutely wonderful for both my daughters. They have trained with him many years, one played all through and my high schooler is next to do the same. Fantastic trainer IMO!

Coaches Mo and Ian.

On the other side of things: Obed. Clout chaser. Tagging players he's hardly worked with. 200 person camps with four coaches.
Ohhhh, I can see your point but can’t fully agree. Obed is selective about his ā€œrep ā€œ but he is an excellent trainer - note trainer vs coach- dealing with soccer fundamental skills. Which is why so ynt and pro players seek him out. Is that tagging? Maybe, but if it’s real…. Then it’s real not empty bragging.

Now will he take your kid from a club player to pro player? No, that really depends on if your kid has that in their balling.

Don’t trash the man while ignoring the realities of the player.

As for large camps….. it’s fun. Not meant to be transformative. To expect other than that???..,???

I dunno.
I have seen him tag some kids, ones my family are quite familiar with, who have spent maybe an hour or two with the man.
Just feels shady.

As for the camps, I dunno. $200 bucks for that lack of actual training so something else. Very predatory.

I feel - sadly - that this is the world we have vis a vis social media. The tager and the tagee act in reciprocal roles, trading places depending on who wants the attention. In the case of business, it's SOP for advertising. Heck, I have to wait 2 minutes for my favorite word game to load these days due to the lead in advertising. Used to just click on the app and play. Sigh.......

$200 for a week camp 9am-1pm does not seem over the top if you consider it as organized play./recreation If you're looking for "serious training" it's going to be at a higher cost. Should that be? Probably not. But housing should not start at 1.4 million in SoCal either.

I'd say all camps are pretty much a scam. Topballer and obed have too many kids in camps but most camps do as well. It's not really a learning environment, I don't really blame them. Parents will line up and give money to you, why would they refuse?

I’d say at least MO’s is more reasonably priced and the player to coach ratio is much better.
I’ve seen Obed claim ā€œxā€ number of coaches it’s just some high level high schooler attending for free and ā€œcoachingā€

I’m pretty strategic about the camps I choose for my kids. I use them to evaluate coaches and clubs, and to see where my kids stack up relative to their peers. Overall, I’ve found camps to be very useful and have often leveraged them to find better fits and higher levels of competition.

That said, beyond extra touches and the free play that usually happens at the end of sessions, I don’t expect my kids to walk away having mastered a new skill from a camp.

Let me add an extra level of craziness to what you're already doing.

Why not just reach out to the coaches you like and pay them for private training? Most coaches have no problem doing this and players will get better training 1on1. However, what this will do is provide more $$$ to the coach than coaching a camp. Do this 2x a week and you can ask the coach since youre kid has been training with them at what point would they be good enough to play on their team. As you can see theres a balance between $$$ and talent and training. But $$$ opens doors especially if you're feeding a coach $300+ a week.

Camps can be fun for kids. But ask yourself why you're there. If its just to get on a certain coaches radar theres likely better ways to do this.

Pretty sure every trainer and coach at a camp makes the most money for their time at camps, it's also why it's the worst for training/development (can be great for fun or babysitting). The entire business model and margin is based on $/head/cost(per sq ft.), up and down, do the math at camps versus soccer matches and you see why there are so many trainers and camps.

I bet they do ok. I also bet most of the $$$ goes to the club first before trickling down to coaches.

I have send my kid to a camp to get on a certain coach’s radar. But that’s as far as I would go.

If I were a coach, I would string you along and tell you your child is not quite there… even if your child is good enough .. just to milk you for more private lessons. Kids do get on a team through a coach’s side hustle. The words also do get out and both the kid’s and the coach’s reputation take a hit.

The stringing along part would only work for so long. Eventually the parent would force the issue and the coach would need to respond. If the coach says not going to happen so be it. Think of the privates as quality training.

However more often than not Ive seen this tactic work especially at younger ages. You just need to time the privates to start occurring a little before tryouts. This way you're on the coaches radar when they're picking their team. Also it becomes a natural discussion about your kid playing on their team.

I wish it wasn't this way. But it is. Coaches aren't killing it in the salary department. You can tell by the cars they drive. What you might consider not that much money others might consider meals for the week.
