More potential NCAA changes

Carlsbad7

PREMIER

1. All sports can redshirt like in football. This will give players 5 years of eligibility.

2. National letter of intent will be scrapped. This will allow recruits to change schools up until the last minute.

3. Players can get paid exceeding the expenses to play. This was most dramatically highlighted by tennis players that would win $$$ in off season tournaments and have to choose between accepting the $$$ and maintaining eligibility.

4. Agents potential roles are being expanded beyond NIL only.

Of all the changes #3 has the most potential to dramatically change college sports to its core. For soccer players if I'm reading this right you could play for a pro team + get paid. Then if you were cut you could go back to playing in college (for 5 years of eligibility)

Brave new world...

There was also another big NCAA controversy over the weekend. Oklahoma State football put QR code stickers on their players helmets that directed viewers to the Oklahoma State general player NIL fund.

NCAA being NCAA made them remove the stickers saying it was a uniform violation.

But what a good way to solicit donations to the teams NIL fund. Imagine what could happen if the QR link went to specific players NIL donations page not the general teams NIL fund.

Or, you can go Pro, travel the world for free for a few years and then come back and play soccer for free and get a degree. I love this for the girls. Get all your undergraduate work done online as a Pro and then come back and enjoy the college life.

Be careful what you wish for. If you can play in college after playing professionally it will instantly make playing professionally the #1 choice for all players and playing in college the #2 fallback option. There will be 23 year old ex-pros college freshman sitting on piles of $$$ going to school for free for 5 years of eligibility. (28 year old seniors that were former pro players)

Personally I agree with this. College is supposed to be a place for learning. You wouldn't bar people working as computer programmers from taking computer programming classes just because they worked as a professional programmer. The reality is the entire NCAA concept of "amateurism" is a scam setup by NCAA + colleges to control and exploit student athletes. With the number of lawsuits going on soon college sports are going to end up looking just like the pros.

Lots of money changes hands in this business and none was going to the amateur slave. Ed O got this ball rolling. Pro is already taken over #1 for the top players. College is #2 but might be dropped altogether.

When 10000+ young ladies are getting paid to play college soccer at all division levels, I wouldn't call it being an amateur slave. 99% of these ladies won't play pro. Do we really change the system for 100 players to screw over the rest? Would it even happen? We need to remind ourselves only men's football and basketball make any real money for colleges. Changes that affect them will be dramatically watered down for most women's sports(basketball excluded).

"When" is the key question. Only a select few are getting paid to play girls sports. I want both and. You can go to college for free, play soccer for free and make money. What's not to like about that. I think that's freaking awesome. Or, you can go overseas and play Pro soccer, get paid, take online classes and then come back when your 22 and play 4 more years of college soccer for free, get a degree and get paid. Both of these options are amazing and guess what, "its free for the girls." Now if we can get ECNL to offer the girls' parents free soccer that would be amazing. That way, all the girls, rich and poor can play high level youth soccer with the chance of playing in college or playing Pro.

I’m not sure a former pro with piles of $$$ would want to deal with college ball.

Lower level of competition. Not great pay. Delays your degree.

It would be more like minor league baseball. There are a few people who drop down from the majors. But most players are still trying to work their way up.

100% Zeke. I like the options for all the players. This is game changer news. The top Pros making millions would never go back to school like Rodney did. No way. I do see some girls who just want to continue playing and travel the world for a few years as a Pro. Then come back, go to college for two years to get that degree and maybe a master's degree and play 4 years. Be all done at 26 and go get a job. 26 is the new 22. No rush to work 50 hours a week to make a buck. Soccer is very hard on the women's body and many of these top players tear ACLs.

I read #3 as schools paying players money beyond just scholarships and expenses. Basically it's legalizing schools buying players. The bidding for football players is now legal

I’m ok with that.

If a musical group can fill the Rose Bowl or attract millions of TV viewers, they get paid for it. Why should it be any different for a group of athletes who fill exactly the same venue?

Pay them what they’re worth.

It's amazing how much things have changed in less than a year. This time last year people were calling me crazy for pushing for NWSL Acadamies.

Now with all the changes in NCAA patents are looking for a group to provide an equivalent to MLS Next but for girls just to cut through all the madness + create stability.

What a ride, if you get annoyed with the youth soccer scene wait a month or two and everything will change.

It’s going to be hard for freshman to make teams if you can play 5 years plus a redshirt so 6 years. I imagine redshirt year will be like 3to4 games or something.

Harbaugh just said the quiet part out loud reguarding NCAA "They’ve been keeping money away from players for decades,” Harbaugh said, via ESPN. “They just got hit with a $2.7 billion lawsuit. They have no credibility. That’s the truth.”

I bet more and more come out of the woodwork against NCAA now that there's blood in the water. The reason Harbaugh is coaching the Chargers is because NCAA wanted to give him 4 years in a penalty box for what they deemed recruitment violations.

I bet all the middleman money kickback side hustle money will come to an end soon. Everyone was getting paid but the girls in soccer nd the guys in football risking their lives for a scholarship. These warrior soccer ladies would fight through hormones, abuse from assholes, all just for wanting to play a sport they love to play with their friends. Youth soccer is taking a boat load of money from the parents. I don't see that model working either. Blow the whole thing up and start over.

What I see are colleges just being cheap + not giving all student athletes full ride scholorships. Many schools because of their tax exempt status and massive endowment funds compounding interest could give ALL accepted students free rides and still make money.

The idiot parents that buy into the "college sports are an experience" need to get their heads checked. There's too much money floating around and talent is getting screwed. This needs to stop.

All of us from the time we were born were told to go to college or be a ditch digger. For some reason and only Lord knows why, the girls were told, "if you want to continue playing soccer after club, you MUST go to college." This is where the Unicorn comes into play and their rich parents. A+ student plus 1400+ SAT and great soccer player=Unicorn That is wrong for a standalone soccer player. The guys don't get judged off their report card, but little Susie Soccer player has to be a goody two shoe, excellent student, do volunteer work and one that STFU. The GDA was all wrong and so is college soccer. I told you and the others big changes are coming, and boy was I right, again. Change can be hard on those with the most to lose. I appreciate your insights from your perch.

Colleges are not making money from soccer. Why would they pay atheletes who do not produce profit? Redistribution of wealth from profitable football to unprofitable soccer sure sounds like socialism.
