MLS next

Why are private schools allowed to have their players on both school and club teams? Glad/not glad my son is on mlsnext team U11 but I think the friendships made on school teams are important.

In theory it is because some students can only afford their private school due to an athletic scholarship, so it would impinge upon their access to education to prevent them from playing. Whether that is actually the case in all instances is another matter.

The other way around it is if you quit the mlsn team and rejoin it after the high school freeze. Now this only works if you are a top baller and they don’t want to lose you, you aren’t in title contention, and there are other kids on the roster willing and able to step up during the time period. Sometimes used by seniors who already have college placement…the u19 back end of the season is a mess unless the team is in title contention: everyone has other things to do so they’ll usually be desperate to get anyone they can back so long as they have enough players during the high school season
