MLS 2 league?

BBJ

BRONZE
I recently saw a NorCal Club advertising 'the opportunity to play in the new MLS 2 league for U14 - U18/19'.
Does anyone know anything about this new league? Are we adding yet another layer in youth soccer?

I believe this is for those clubs without U15 and U17 teams in MLS Next. Those clubs will have teams play other MLS 2 teams. Helps the clubs retain players.

Seems like MLS 2 teams will play in the National Academy League. Not sure about MLS affiliation with that league other than many MLS Next Clubs on the east coast are putting 2nd teams in this league. I would expect a Norcal announcement from this league within the next two weeks.

Is this in competition with EA or an addition to EA?

NAL is the same people that used to administrate the EA who lost the contract, got annoyed and started the same thing on the East coast and are now trying to get into the west coast market. It’s run by CM8 who used to have the EA contract.

Right - but MLS2 *was* launched since this thread was started, here's one of the releases:

It is not affiliated with NAL or EA.

I’m seeing a good number of older boys this year trying out at multiple clubs. The boys are talking about this new league, especially amongst the ones who want to play high school.

This isn’t MLS next 2. This is Cal North trying to regain some relevance in the landscape. This is ‘X2’ not affiliated at all with MLS but just has the MLS clubs reserve teams

Other announcements have this league playing MLS2 teams elsewhere. It comes down to "what's in a name". It will be clearer to determine when we aren't just comparing press releases and actual games & playoffs are held next season.

That sucks for players, though. Because you don't know what you are signing up for.

Yep, no doubt. It's probably pretty common for inaugural seasons of just about any league, I imagine - it's always going to take a leap of faith of some sort.

Sounds like it is a closed loop Tier 3 League that allows MLS Next clubs a better way to insulate the third teams from being exposed by NorCal NPL teams.😉
