How’s the 2024-2025 season going?

Tough draw for legends and MVLA. That should be a semifinal or final.

I’m thinking top bracket ends with Solar vs Koge in the semifinal with Koge pushing through.

Legends and MVLA go to PKs, Legends advances.

FC Stars and Bay Area surf go to PKs, FC stars advances.

Final ends a rematch of koge vs legends.

Recap. Surf dominated the first 15 minutes, should have 2-3 goals with one sky’d shot from the 6 yard box and open goal. Michigan on their fronnt foot the entire game and Surf playing out of the back (perhaps unwisely) made a blind pass right to the Hawk forward for an easy goal. Scored again off a corner kick and Surf lost composure and started rushing/individual play. Michigan iced it late in the 2nd half with their third goal. Michigan was the better team today.
Everyone knows how Surf plays. Possession is one thing but their patterns of play are downright predictable. Surf has never had a athletically dominant group but they have top players playing attractive posession soccer. I would had predictable posession soccer to the previous sentence. Tape is out there, need to be more flexible especially with athletic teams that just punish your mistakes. Its not u13 anymore. No excuses as they continue to poach from other rosters nationally. Congrats Hawks! Look out for Stars on the bottom half of the bracket to make it to Final 4 and make it awkward for the CA team that makes that game. Solar vs Koge in semi-finals is the final this year. Please Solar end this Koge assault on attractive soccer.

Pressure the center backs who like to hold onto the ball too long. That's how you beat that team.

Meh. Koge is not a “futbol” team, but plays the game athletically well. At this level, you need luck. Can luck love them 3 times in a row? What does Vegas say?

Sd surf is the quality team. But has fallen short the last two years. Solar should never be counted out due to their quality and free spirited persona. Bay Surf is a real possibility. Quality, skilled and motivated. Legends outcome is dependent on the performance of 3 players, if these are hot - they go. If these are blunted, then no
Koge is a “futbol” team. Not sure what games you’ve been watching. So cal is filled with great teams.

Come on now. This is a team that is incredibly good and if what you said was true, they would have lost plenty of times over the past few years. To say that Surf has never had an athletically dominant group is just stupid. What other club has won 15 or so National Championships etc etc. Their style of play is the best in girls soccer in my opinion with the exception of at the younger ages and this is still young, they can be robotic and haven’t learned well enough to adapt on the field, on their own. I could give my opinion as to why this team has underperformed the last couple of years but it isn’t for public consumption. My prediction is that they will go to Richmond in 2026. Time will tell. They are getting a new coach who knows the girls and is an excellent coach. This is the third year with Deza and my experience is two years with a coach is solid, adding more years than that is dangerous.

Yup. Back in 2017, San Jose Earthquakes was #1 at possession in top girls' division. Surf was #2. Surf would do a sneak attack, full court press on their defense (great possession teams always start from the back) at different times in the game and cause "deer in headlight moment" and then counter them and score. Surf won 2-0 in epic battle, after beating then #1 Legends 5-0. Good luck everyone🏅

Surf 2010’s have just as many championships as Sporting 2010’s

Surf parent needs to lay off the prophecies and keep in mind that wins tend to bring more wins while losses tend to bring more losses. Will Surf 2010 respond with changes that address issues? Probably. Will the changes made translate into a national championship. I wouldn't bet on it. Usually finding the right combination takes time.

My outside feedback on Surf is that the team has always seemed small to me. I question if they've finally hit a point with current players where they're maxed out. If the end goal is a National Championship.

This will make Surf Cup interesting.

It will also be interesting to see if top players stay on a team if the coach starts playing with starters + bringing on new.

I think people are overreacting a bit to Surf’s loss to the Hawks. Surf has made it to Richmond the last two years, which says a lot about their consistency and quality.

Big credit to the Hawks for the win, but every team—yes, even your favorite professional team in any sport [insert team here]—has an off day and did not play their best.

I’ve seen Surf play several times and other teams at the Showcases and Playoffs the past several years, and in my view, they’re still one of the ELITE teams in this age group—not just in SoCal, but across the country.

Are we done writing the obituary of a team that went 16-1-1 last year?

(Y’all sound downright ridiculous.)
true. It's ridiculously hard to win a national championship even for the best team. So many great teams out there, and its soccer for crying out loud. A great team can get beat by a less great team - it happens to the best all the time.

Agree with all this. I was arguing that it was pretty easy for Hawks to win convincingly. These weren't cheap goals bouncing off knee caps on corner kicks. Not all wins and losses are the same. This Surf team is underachieving and does not have the size and athleticism to undeperform like they did in a round of 16 single elimination game. I think their brand of soccer is top notch but this team is off, and with all the indvidual and sd surf resources at disposal it warrants being called out, that is all.

Surf plays a very good possession game.
I think there players are going to be ahead of there peers at the next level. Not the biggest, most athletic but I'm sure a lot of teams wouldn't mind changing personal with them. And let's give Hawks a lot of credit. They put a lot of pressure on Surf defense and we're able to keep it up all game. Not many teams have been able to accomplish that. And Surf breeze threw group play. Surf could have been caught looking ahead! Either way congrats to Hawks !

Hawks were the victor in knockout round. They did well. Their press was exceptional. They made opportunities and capitalized. We are all in agreement.

What am having trouble understanding is the level of vitriol being sent towards the surf squad. These are 8th and 9th grade girls. They seem to be nice kids. They work hard. They are friends with players on other teams….. what are some of you really mad at?

Soccer is just a game. These are kids. It’s a one time passage in the carpet of life.

Off the soapbox....

On to the NOW. And the NOW is the 8 teams going to compete in Richmond. Solar v Fairfax, Hawks v HBK, Legends v MVLA and Stars v Bay Area Surf. I read here that the finals are the semis, ie HBK v Solar. Yeah, I get that viewpoint. For me the first game I want to see is Legends v MVLA. Recently renewed Legends v perpetually excellent MVLA. Gonna be a barn burner.

Excited to watch all these 224+ players strive to bring their best. And hear their parents support from the sidelines (aka - GO NUTS!)

Looking forward to some great moments

Agree. When a team usually plays once a week, like on Saturdays during season, it generally benefits very technically skilled roster, much like how SD Surf operates.

However, tournaments such as the ECNL Nationals introduce a different challenge, requiring teams to compete like 4–5 matches over a condensed timeframe. This is insane! In that environment, where every opponent is elite, technical ability alone isn’t enough. Teams must also be exceptionally fit, physically resilient, and supported by a deep bench to sustain high-level performance game after game to win it all.

In this way, having a bigger and more physically dominant squad can be a difference.

After watching the top 15 year-old girls in the country compete at the highest level in ECNL, one thing is crystal clear: at this age athleticism starts to play a massive role in the outcome of games, much more than most want to admit. Teams that come in with pure technical skill might look sharp early on, but as the game wears on, the more athletic, better-conditioned teams often take over. Speed, strength, and stamina allow them to press harder, recover faster, and create more chances simply by outworking their opponents.

But here’s the catch. Pure athleticism alone won’t win the biggest games either. Teams that rely only on physicality often hit a wall when they face an opponent that can match their speed and also has the technical ability to control the ball and dictate the tempo. So what’s the real winning formula? It’s simple. A team that’s fit and fast but also composed and confident on the ball. A team that can play possession-based soccer when needed, then flip the switch and go direct when the moment calls for it.

It’s all about adaptability. The best teams don’t just show up with one game plan. They adjust to the flow of the game, the opponent, and even the conditions. And when you combine that adaptability with a strong, organized defense that minimizes mistakes, that’s the team with the highest odds of winning it all in Virginia.

The final eight in Virginia are no joke. Every team is talented, hungry, and competitive. The margins are razor-thin. So the real question becomes: who has the depth, the complete roster, and the ability to read and adjust to any challenge thrown at them? The team that can be athletic, technical, adaptable, and defensively disciplined is the team most likely to lift the trophy.
