If NWSL could have created NWSL Next at the time like MLS did with MLS Next in 2020 the entire girls youth soccer landscape would be a different place. The problem with DA/GDA is that the carrot at the end of the stick was USMNT and USWNT. The net was too wide (and expensive to maintain) for essentially 2 teams.
MLS Next works because there are 20 potential pro teams and 1 USMNT team players in the system can end up on.
This is why people are watching what happens with NWSL so closely. The template for how to successfully (depending on your definition of success) funnel talent into pro and US National teams us defined on the boys/mens side. MLS benefits and USMNT benefits. NWSL is likely working with US Soccer to do the same for women. Setting themselves and the USWNT as the beneficiaries.
