Top flight is a pretty solid collection of teams, with good representation from in and out of SoCal. Considering the fact that you have to win your group to advance, this is a tough task for even those teams who might be considered favorites by some. Kudos to whoever wins it. Heck, kudos to whoever makes it out of group play. Good luck to all!
Surf Cup Breakdown.
Alice Cooper sang, “School’s out for summer” and this is so true. Most clubs are in their final week(s) of club break and summer is just commencing. Yet we are in the limbo of the club season. Yes there have been spring tourneys, spring league, scrimmages galore, and there are July tournaments in cue. Nonetheless we are all waiting for something to fill a void. For what we ask? The answer is Surf Cup. It is the one event that seems to jump start and christen the rest of the club year here in the Golden State. Surf Cup is also an event that many crave to attend or choose to cast negative aspersions for so many reasons one cannot say. Despite how any of us feel we all are attune to the match-ups and their outcomes. Here is a brief examination of those teams pitted against one another. All rankings in parenthesis are from Youth Soccer (National) Rankings. Good luck to all.
-Group A-
Dallas Texans South (1)
Slammer FC Elite (31)
So Cal Blues (16)
Surf SC Hawaii (7)
The Dallas Texan’s certainly come in as one of the tournament favorites with the number one ranking. They have made some heat waves in Texas and want to make some seismic ones here in Cali. None the less they have some unfinished business to take care of. But it will not be an easy task to do with this insane lineup of teams. Group of death! Oh, yes it is! Slammer’s FC is a team trying to get all its moving pieces working in alignment. They have some newly formed talent and duo of coaches with CB/AW pulling the strings. So Cal Blues are flying high with their recent form at Legends and at Man City Cup, but they have not had a challenge like this in pool play. Surf SC Hawaii has done well making the last the two finals here on the mainland and won last year’s Black flight.

MVLA Roma Blue (26)
Do the words not again come to mind? Another group of death! Yes it is! Wow! This is quite a match of teams and styles. Albion will come out trying to move the ball as close to those blades of grass that the turf will allow and a Bermuda cut to boot. As well as two spring finalist appearances. Anaheim Surf have a real talent in their center midfielder who glides around the field. They too made some recent headlines at SuperCopa. Dallas Sting come in as last year’s champs and have a target about the size of Texas on their backs. Especially with a May cup in their pocket and lil bit of hunger from June. MVLA come in with a pair of fresh Nor Cal rings on their fingers and maybe some swagger. We will see.

Real Colorado National (22)
Obviously we have come back to earth and not every group is a crazy train. But the rest of the journey is! That’s if you can find your way onto the yellow brick road. Clarkstown come to us as an unknown and are venturing west to see how they measure up. Welcome to Cali. They do have some impressive finishes and should not be taken lightly. LAGSB is growing as each week passes and will certainly look to pass like they were playing in a rondo. And may give teams a pain on both sides of their necks. Bengay anyone? Legends FC are a force to reckon with and no doubt a favorite to many. They added some new talent that is just beginning to emerge and will take it to anyone in their path. Real Colorado are another team looking to spread their wings and find new challenges. Surf Cup will definitely bring that to them.

San Juan Spirit (4)
The look of this group says nicely balanced but is it? Arsenal Colorado come out here with the anticipation of testing their mettle but not sure they have that extra something to move them along with a group of this caliber. Beach LB has added a few players to their roster. They have also seemingly changed their play to fit their player selection and it fits them. They have had good results against top competition and against dah boys. SD Surf one of last year’s finalists look to do the same. As usual they will ping the ball around like a pin ball machine. And will enjoy watching the competition chase them. San Juan Spirit come back to Surf Cup with the hopes of building off of last year’s quarter finals and going farther. They have done well this spring with some rings on their fingers. Like Surf and a few others will try to possess the ball.

Dallas Texans vs So Cal Blues: This will be a game where like is matched with like. Might faces might and only will can overcome.
Group B
Anaheim Surf vs Dallas Sting: Come and watch the So Cal State Cup champion against the Surf Cup champion. May look like the Arturo Gatti vs. Mickey Ward fight #1.
Group C
LAGSB vs Legends: The last two times these teams played were insane. A back and forth competition that had all glued to their Tommy Bahama chairs.
Group D
SD Surf vs Beach LB: Talk about coming out of the gates in game one. This will certainly be a game of who wants it more from the beginning. Make or break!

Not sure which Semi your referring to but they beat Galaxy SD 7-0 in last years semis. Beat Surf Hawaii by 1 goal, but I see Surf Hawaii made the top flight this year. Just thought that was interesting how badly they beat up the Comp in 2nd flight last year to be put in same flight.

Hawai'i Rush won Flight 2 Surf Cup last year vs Surf Hawai'i. This year they lost in their Presidents Day Cup (Their version of State Cup to Whitefield FC who choose not to go to Surf Cup), this is probably why they were placed in Tier 2
Surf Hawai'i automatically makes it into Surf because they are a Surf team and their Director helps out a lot of of Surf events, Surf Hawai'i did not participate in their State Cup this year. They did a lot of traveling though participating in mainland tournaments to help with their rankings.
