When was it said? Who said it? What framework was it said in and why is it relevant to the politics of today? A lot of people say a lot of things, like referring to fallen soldiers as “suckers” and “losers”. It just depends on who they are that makes those statements relevant or not. Being statement adjacent or associated with the speaker thereof doesn’t always signal culpability (see: Trump/Epstein/ Maxwell/Kanye/Fuentes/Musk/Hokit/Trump from the past/Cohn/etc).
 
Turns out MAGA doesn't like it so much when it happens to them. A tearful Trump voter has gone viral after his fiancée was arrested by ICE, and now he's calling it "the Gestapo."

John Gannon, a 75-year-old Texas Republican, watched eight ICE agents surround 45-year-old Yasmin Suarez Reyes at a Houston airport and haul her into a car without a word of explanation.

His fiancée came into the country legally in 2023, applied for asylum, and while her case sat in the government's own backlog she was granted a work permit and a Texas driver's license. No criminal record. She was on her way to a furniture convention in Las Vegas when plainclothes agents pulled her out of the terminal.

She has been in a jail cell for two weeks since.

Here is the part worth remembering. ICE is not kicking down cartel doors. It is standing in airport terminals collecting people whose paperwork is technically pending, because that is the easy number to hit. A woman with a driver's license and an open asylum claim is a softer target than an actual criminal, and soft targets fill a quota faster.

Gannon thought the deportations were for "the criminals." He wants them to "leave the mom and pops and the kids alone." He says he feels totally betrayed.

He is describing, with real anguish, the exact policy he voted for.

The cruelty was never a malfunction. It was the product. He assumed the machine came with a setting that recognized people like him.

It does not. That is the entire point of a machine like this.

Gannon is not some powerless bystander. He is a wealthy man who owns more than a thousand billboards across the country, the kind of guy who can put any message he wants in front of millions of drivers.

And this is where it stops being about one heartbroken billboard mogul and starts being about everyone who never got a CBS interview.

Thousands of families have already been split apart the same quiet way, with no famous fiancé and no camera crew.

Yasmin's case is not unusually harsh. It is ordinary. It only reached the news because the man who loves her happens to own a thousand billboards, and all that money and reach still could not stop eight agents from walking off with her.

That is the thing about a system that treats a human being as a number to be filled. Sooner or later it reaches for someone you love, and it will not care what you own, how much tax you pay, or who you voted for.

Gannon says that if he could talk to Trump he would ask him, "What are you doing?"

The government already answered. She overstayed. Pending applications do not confer legal status. She will get her hearing.

It's funny, popular Muslim politicians, the ones in the news lately, Zohran Mamdani and Abdul El-Sayed in particular, ran on a message of unity, diversity, tolerance, community, feed the hungry, clothe the poor, heal the sick -- the sort of thing that Jesus guy Christians love so much talked about all the time. Republicans, in a furious panic, call that "Communism" and say these men threaten the very existence of America as we know it.

Think about that.

You do realize whataboutism doesn’t rationalize bad behavior? But then again maybe you let your kids get away with things because they told you other kids had done something similar in the past. No wonder there is a generation of lazy incells. Were you also taught to point at others for blame? You people need help.
