Hill Country and Idaho are good calls, hell, you can even get a beautiful home on a lake in Arkansas for cheap. Most likely it will be Utah, but a lot can happen between now and then. The 2nd home is paid for and part of it generates income and is set-up to remain in the family in perpetuity. Let's just say its location is hard to beat.Hill country in Texas is nice, damn good bbq. I know half a dozen who moved to Idaho and love it there. But you are 100% on wanting to keep a place in Cali . . . once you leave you can’t (financially) come back.
