I know it's tough going down a man with 2/3 left in the game. But if two teams are relatively evenly matched, then being down 1 man isn't going to necessarily result in a blowout if the right adjustments are made. For starters, if you go down a man early then you take away an attacking player, so you can maintain your defensive shape and the ability to hold possession in the middle third. If the game is still within reach with under 10-15 minutes remaining, then you can choose to gamble by shifting the formation to add an attacker and removing a defender. Going down a man early does make it very difficult to score. But a team shouldn't be getting blown out unless there was already a mismatch to begin with.
