University Shutting Down All College Sports

Sonoma State Shuts Down College Sports

We are going to see more and more of this - college athletics sponsored by the college is going to die for most (Big 4 will live on longer) - will be replaced by club sports I’m sure, which if you think of the mission of a university, it makes a ton more sense. Maybe the D3 model will make a run of it as well - more sustainable and aligns with the mission of a University better IMO. One thing for sure - the current model is on it's death bed.

With NIL and all the subsequent changes College sports will never be the same. Used to be the big $$ sports pulled the others along especially with Title IX but looks like that is changing. Maybe for the better? Colleges go back to being centers for learning not spending millions on new locker rooms, fields and sports facilities.

The way I see things going is the biggest of the biggest college teams will continue to exist. Also expensive private schools will continue to have sports teams. Everyone in the middle will go away or specialize in 1-2 sports.

Maybe if Newsom and the California House and Senate did not piss away billions on homeless and fire "unpreparedness" Sonoma St. would still have sports... https://www.cbsnews.com/sanfrancisc...five-years-didnt-consistently-track-outcomes/

Yah, we need to tinkle away money on homeless (or did it go to homeless or Newsom slush fund...)

This is not a good example. Looks like this school is facing serious budget deficits...eliminating 46 faculty positions, 6 academic departments. That school is just struggling overall and a no-brainer that they are cutting athletics to help keep school afloat.

It’s not a D1/NIL story, but it may be a sign of the future for public D2 schools. Sonoma State isn’t the only small school struggling with declining enrollment.

if so, I hope they’ll at least be able to keep sports on a club/IM model. An extracurricular option for the students who want it, but not much more.
