University Shutting Down All College Sports

Sonoma State Shuts Down College Sports

We are going to see more and more of this - college athletics sponsored by the college is going to die for most (Big 4 will live on longer) - will be replaced by club sports I’m sure, which if you think of the mission of a university, it makes a ton more sense. Maybe the D3 model will make a run of it as well - more sustainable and aligns with the mission of a University better IMO. One thing for sure - the current model is on it's death bed.

With NIL and all the subsequent changes College sports will never be the same. Used to be the big $$ sports pulled the others along especially with Title IX but looks like that is changing. Maybe for the better? Colleges go back to being centers for learning not spending millions on new locker rooms, fields and sports facilities.

The way I see things going is the biggest of the biggest college teams will continue to exist. Also expensive private schools will continue to have sports teams. Everyone in the middle will go away or specialize in 1-2 sports.

Maybe if Newsom and the California House and Senate did not piss away billions on homeless and fire "unpreparedness" Sonoma St. would still have sports... https://www.cbsnews.com/sanfrancisc...five-years-didnt-consistently-track-outcomes/

Yah, we need to tinkle away money on homeless (or did it go to homeless or Newsom slush fund...)

This is not a good example. Looks like this school is facing serious budget deficits...eliminating 46 faculty positions, 6 academic departments. That school is just struggling overall and a no-brainer that they are cutting athletics to help keep school afloat.
It’s not a D1/NIL story, but it may be a sign of the future for public D2 schools. Sonoma State isn’t the only small school struggling with declining enrollment.

if so, I hope they’ll at least be able to keep sports on a club/IM model. An extracurricular option for the students who want it, but not much more.

This is a tragedy for that school, that area, and the student body at large. Maybe it's necessary, and I understand they are going to pivot from being a broader, gen ed, A&S type school to being highly specialized for the health and winery/ag/business industry (which does make a lot of sense for their area). But as it pertains to the college experience that most of us had wherever we went, that won't be there at SSU. The soccer programs there were among the more successful ones in all of the CalState schools, so it's a big deal. But yeah, they DEFINITELY have had funding and budget problems for the past 10 years.

My prediction is that the recent change in the NCAA eligibility rules not counting juco years against the 4 years of athletic eligibility, you will see a lot of jucos getting flushed with more athletic money & support and this will become a much more travelled road than in the past. SRJC, which is already one of the busier JC's in CA, will really benefit from Sonoma shutting athletics down.

In some ways, I do agree that Sonoma State's situation was accellerated by a lot of very specific factors that are unique to them, but I do also think that they may be like the canary in the coal mine and the other deaths will follow but on a longer, more drawn out timeline.

In other words, they're so poorly managed they could make Karen Bass (or a Club soccer Director) look like a heart surgeon!!!

This University's enrolled peaked in 2015 and has dropped close to 40% since. It's lucky to still be open.

There is an enrollment cliff coming. Many small universities will struggle.
