Let's start with the commenting on a soccer forum in the middle of the day. Hey kettle, you're black too. There are periods in my work day where I have some extra time to get away from work. I like this forum and choose to spend (too) much time on it. This forum has helped me tremendously with understanding the club soccer scene and I am very grateful it exists. It is nice to be able to come to a site where you can ask question and not expect to be ridiculed for your thoughts/opinions.

As for missing school to attend a NT camp.....absolutely, my dd would not attend the camp if it interfered with her school schedule. I realize that there are many parents out there that have a different opinion on this matter and that is cool with me.

I was only asking for opinions on the matter and not passing judgement or saying parents are wrong if they have their son/daughter attend a NT camp.

The opportunity, unfortunately, will never be available for your DD then if that's the course you should choose . Just looking back into the historical dates, the majority of the camps seem to conflict with school. Wouldn't you be afraid of the opportunity never presenting itself again?

Thank you for this information. I was unaware of what the particulars are with the NT camps. It doesn't change my opinion of missing school, but it does give me more insight into the matter.

Absolutely see both sides but I have to admit my initial instinct was against having my DD attend an extended camp. I think it depends on how you view this whole soccer ride we're on. To me, the end game is just to use soccer as a tool for admission to the best academic institution possible. I actually really don't care about getting any scholarship money, that would just be icing on the cake.

Now, if there were NBA $$ at the end of the rainbow, I'm sure I'd have a different opinion. My DD herself may have a different opinion. However, after reading other posts about study hall and actual accomodations from the school, I'd be ok with it. I think the thing I'd be most excited about is for the sheer experience of it for my DD. I wouldn't be losing any sleep if she didn't get picked for the NT, even if I thought she was better than the kid that did get picked. That's just my outlook. Again, my DD may have a whole different take on it, but that is my perspective on it.

The best '04 in the GNT pool isn't even attending this camp. She's in Germany playing with the U16s. She was called up last year along with the '02s and has consistently attended camps with the '02s. She's not playing on a GDA or an ECNL team. She's been playing on a top '01/02 team for awhile now.

Out of the 24 '04/'05 players who are called up, 4 play on ECNL teams. The rest all play on GDA teams. All these players have been identified and scouted for quite some time, so what team they currently play on did not play a factor in their call-up. Once they are on the radar, they will continue to be scouted, even those who won't get called back again in the near future, because at the younger ages they can develop at different rates.

Congrats to the 6 So Cal players who got called up. It will be eye-opening for them to experience playing with other highly talented players from other parts of the country. It will be interesting to see who will rise to the top among this incredibly skilled group.

Glad you brought up the ages and grad dates- it's eye opening how even though it's 04 he majority are 2022.

Sometimes you have to decline an invite. All of the college players were asked if they wanted to be called in during the season. Most said no. Injuries are the main reason for declines. They have made accommodations for academic exams that conflict and occasionally a girl will leave camp and come back or have a test proctored.

That's why you say yes to those early NT invites-- the high schools & teachers & school district will work with you.
Later on-- after your DD has committed- if you have to decline for an academic reason, it happens....or like MAP said, most declines are because of injuries...but at that point they are already committed to one of their dream schools

I agree 99.5% with what you said. I disagree about your player though. She would be recognized as an elite talent even if she had never attended an YNT camp. There are a couple players (not many) on your player's future college team and on my player's college team that were committed prior to any YNT accolades. I can think of 3 starters on my players team including her that got YNT invites after being committed.

I'd say that the top colleges are a little more diligent in their evaluations of players and for good reason. If they are in the PAC 12 or the Big Ten they are stuck with their scholarship players for 4 years!

Honestly, no I would not be afraid of missing the opportunity. The NT's are for players who are obsessed with soccer (IMHO). My dd is not obsessed with soccer and neither am I.

Of course it looks great! If NCAA changes recruiting years though this may get interesting. There are a lot of u14 lemons that schools have bought, and the transfer rates are concerning.
There is still way too much time to see how a player and their game evolves. 14 is a start but nothing more

Justafan, I think you hit the nail on the head here. If my dd were to change her opinion on the matter, then I would have to rethink. I really like the idea of study hall and the other accommodations to attend these camps.

Part of my logic on this matter is that my dd hopefully will make MUCH more money in her chosen professional career than if she chased the USWNT dream and became a professional soccer player. Now, if women's professional soccer players made the type of money of NBA, MLB, NFL, etc. players, it's probably a much different way of thinking.

Not all YNT players are obsessed with soccer. Some tell their parents AND coaches that they are more worried about their chemistry exam and can't miss it...

It can be managed. It isn't for everyone. I have found that 95% of high level female soccer players are good students. You can't even make the academic all PAC 12 2nd team without a 3.77 gpa.

If you have a kid that plays in SoCal at the highest levels and in the biggest showcases, all they have to do is ball and they will get a look eventually and you can count on that.

The key is they have to be a baller. Not a really good player. They have to be a club player that you have to account for if you are on the other team.

Again, not sure I could find a cooler life experience for my 'child' than this... One month in a foreign nation, competing at an elite level, meeting other peers from around the world and immersing themselves in one of the great nations in the world. Growing up and being where I am in life, those are the experiences that shape you and teach about life. My .02

The 16s are gone from Sept 6-15th...it's like 1 and 1/2 weeks off school.
Domestic camps are typically 1 week...international are 1.5 to 2 weeks.

It does become much bigger time commitment if your DD is in the pool for roster spot for a U17 WC or U20 WC...then you do really need to consider the school part. Quite a few of the girls do a combo an online/alternative school and/or HS-- if the HS is really supportive, they make it work, but all HS are different.

I enjoy this discussion. I do know of one player who received call ups from my daughters school who in fact did not go at 15/16 due to school. I didn't know that the list comes out well in advance and they declined, then another person was "added" to replace her. It happened and in her case it was for academic related issues and college planning (don't want to be specific but it was absolutely imperative)
She's currently playing on the team she wanted to and doing well.

Several on the 14 list are homeschooled and are focused solely on soccer with no other sports. This trend already exists in our area. We have specific schools as well for athletes and online programs. I don't participate but through my sons was exposed to this years ago .
