The mechanism is simple: when you hold two contradictory beliefs, your brain experiences psychological pain. Not metaphorical pain, actual distress. So instead of changing the belief, your brain performs Olympic-level mental gymnastics to eliminate the contradiction.

Now let's talk MAGA, because it's a fucking masterclass in this phenomenon.

These people worship a "billionaire" who shits in a gold toilet while claiming to fight for the working class. They scream about "freedom" while demanding book bans. They're "pro-life" until kids need healthcare or school lunches. They rage about "elite pedophiles" while defending a man who partied with Epstein and bragged about walking into teen pageant dressing rooms.

Here's where it gets dark: the MORE evidence you show them, the HARDER they commit. That's the dissonance ramping up. So they double down. Again. And again. Until they're storming the fucking Capitol in Viking horns, genuinely believing they're patriots, while the rest of us watch a psychology textbook play out in real-time.

It's not stupidity. It's your brain choosing comfortable delusion over painful truth. And that's way more terrifying.
