The appeal of authoritarianism explained
To some people, feeling safe is the most important thing. It is more important than freedom, it is more important than 'rights'. I came to understand this many years ago when I had a conversation with a conservative. We were visiting a zoo, and I told her that I actually hated zoos. She asked me why, and I told her that it seemed wrong to lock these animals away for life just so we could walk around and look at them. She then said that if they were in the wild, they would die earlier; being in the zoo prolonged their lives. I told her that I understood that, but I'm sure that to them their freedom would be worth it. I asked her how she would feel if she was locked up and had no freedom. She told me that being safe and alive was more important than being free. I believe that this is where we are now, people are frightened and they decided that their safety was worth whatever they had to give up to have it.
