Up until a couple of days ago, not a single person cared about the east wing. People care about the WH itself, but nobody cares about the east wing or the west wing (outside of the oval office). East wing is/are offices for the first lady. Nothing particularly historic of fascinating about that building. It is simply the latest outrage of the day by the press and the dems.
To be honest the upgrade is probably long overdue. When heads of state come in, the US hosts dinners, etc in tents. Tents.
