Today in Fascism

Debunking some of the dumbest lines I tend to hear from Republicans on a few topics.

On universal health care: "I'm not paying for someone else's health care!"

What do you think health insurance is? It's you paying into a giant pool of funds used to cover everyone’s health care. Additionally, when people go to an emergency room and can't pay, racking up thousands of dollars in medical bills, do you not realize those expenses are simply rolled into the cost of services — which then drives up prices for everyone?

So, you are already paying for someone else's health care anyway, just at a higher cost because our system is almost entirely built around a for-profit model.

On gun regulations: "The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun!"

Do you know why we rarely hear about mass shootings involving fully automatic weapons? Because they are very tightly regulated, making them extremely difficult and expensive to obtain.

So, regulations can work.

And if your stance is that "bad guys will find a way to get them," then why don't we have frequent RPG attacks? Is it maybe because you can't simply buy an RPG at a sporting goods store because they are highly regulated?

Bad guys don't regularly get them because the laws and regulations surrounding them actually work.

On taxes: "We need to cut taxes to create jobs!"

If that's true, then why, following Trump's major tax bill that gave corporations massive tax cuts, did many of the largest companies in the country announce significant layoffs — with more planned?

Also, if tax cuts are essential for economic growth, then why did we reach historic economic highs during the 1990s when Clinton raised taxes on higher-income Americans while also helping balance the budget?

Additionally, if tax cuts create jobs, then how do you continue creating jobs once you've cut taxes as much as possible?

On the national debt: "We are the party of fiscal responsibility!"

Fun fact: During Ronald Reagan's eight years in office, he nearly tripled the national debt.

In fact, no Republican president has balanced the budget since Eisenhower. Additionally, Republicans have added significantly more to the national debt than Democrats, and Donald Trump has already added more to the national debt than any president in history, with over two years still left to serve.

On voting: "Illegal immigrants are voting!"

You need a Social Security number to legally register to vote, and undocumented immigrants do not have them. There are also databases in place to verify whether someone is legally allowed to vote.

The only instances anyone has found of non-citizens being registered to vote were largely linked to software glitches or administrative errors — not "millions" of non-citizens purposely trying to register.

If someone tried to illegally register and then cast a ballot, they could face serious criminal penalties for attempting to cast a single illegal vote — which makes little sense as a strategy.

Also, if undocumented immigrants could vote, and Democrats were rigging elections, why do Republicans currently control the White House and Congress?

On oil production: "We need to drill more here so we can drive down the cost of oil and gas!"

If that were how oil prices worked, and we are currently producing more oil than we ever have — hitting record daily production levels dating back to 2024 under Biden — then why are oil prices still high and gas prices still elevated?

It's because oil is traded on a global market, where prices are determined internationally. It doesn't really matter how much we produce domestically unless we are willing to nationalize the oil industry.

Since we are not, and oil is produced and sold by for-profit companies, it will be sold at the highest market price regardless of how much we ultimately produce.

That is how a conflict involving a strategic waterway near Iran on the other side of the planet can lead to Americans — in the land of "drill, baby, drill" — paying higher prices at the pump.

On social programs such as Medicaid and SNAP: "Millions of illegal immigrants are getting these services!"

No, they are not.

You need proof of citizenship or legal status to receive Medicaid or SNAP benefits, and undocumented immigrants do not have that documentation.

Much like voting, these programs use verification systems designed to prevent people who are here illegally from receiving these benefits.

On being pro-life: "We're the party that is pro-life and strongly opposes abortion!"

Okay, other than opposing abortion — which you claim makes you "pro-life" — can you name a single other policy backed by Republicans that protects life?

You cut funding for vital social services that provide food, shelter, and health insurance to millions. Your party eliminated USAID, which likely contributed to preventable deaths in impoverished countries around the world. You strongly oppose additional gun regulations while guns remain one of the leading causes of death among children.

And your economic policies support a system that benefits the wealthiest among us while often leaving the most vulnerable and needy behind.

So, please cite the major policies Republicans have pushed for and passed that protect life, other than being anti-abortion, that justify the "pro-life" label.

Alright, I'll end it there.

Obviously, there are many more topics I could cover, but these are a few of the biggest ones.

The empty, nonsensical talking points used by Republicans have allowed the party to become masters at claiming it represents values that its actions often contradict.

Such as being the "party of Christian family values" while completely selling out to someone who represents the antithesis of what Jesus Christ teaches in the Bible — Donald J. Trump.

It's a party that really stands for nothing other than "trying to own those libs."

That's it — that's the entire platform of today's Republican Party.

So ... Iran is defeated but also somehow able to strike US targets 2700 miles from its borders inside a NATO country on the other side of Europe. And the threat is so credible, the US withdrew its force rather than face it.

Huh.

I don't know about you, but I'm eager to learn how this is all Joe Biden's fault.
I would hope that besides being eager to learn how this is Bidens fault...you would learn that even defeated or close to defeated nations can still inflict damage on their adversaries. This may be a new concept to you...but this has been the norm over the course of human warfare.

Anything else you are surprised by or want to learn about?

I am going to go out on a limb here...but economic theory for you would be a good place to start. In specific study up on the outcomes of socialist policies.
