1987 and still rings true. So, what changed?
It’s arguable that the following “undesirables” have moved from their original haters.
Left
- The city
- Public schools
- Judges
- Multi-National Corporations
- Newspaper owners
Right
- Russia
- Weirdos
- Peaceniks
The Left significantly changed in terms of who they hate. Wow, Public Schools? The City? Multinational Corporations? Their influence in the first two is large compared to the Right. The other 3 have all shifted significantly Left. These changes are not insignificant, but don’t explain what’s happening now. What has also slowly changed from the Left is that in the 60’s and 70’s they were THE fierce proponents of free speech, equal opportunity, and equal protection under the law. They are now unrecognizable from the Left of that time. Their media mouthpieces say out loud that we can’t let “the truth” get in the way of their goals. Companies openly discriminate against non-minorities in hiring and salary in the name of “equity”. The standard is no longer “equal opportunity”. The standard is equal outcomes. A Democratic President worked with social media and newspapers to silence free speech and the left welcomed that with open arms. Our judges take race into account, openly, and poorer outcomes are directed towards non-minorities.
Cleese is also right about what drives it all - anger. Where is the bulk of the unhinged anger today? From those in positions of power - from media to education to government - the Left is the source of the bulk of it. Who is openly attacking the foundations of free speech, individual freedoms, equal protection, and equal opportunity. It’s the Left. What Cleese says still rings true. The change driving our current division is that the Left no longer supports the original foundations of our country.
And, of course, Moderated still suck. Sorry
