From reading your comment, I was curious how non-ecnl cal south teams faired against ecnl (cal south) teams in head to head matchups over the weekend (Surf thanksgiving and Silver lake showcase), results: overall cal south ecnl teams won 6, lost 2 and tied 1 vs. non ecnl teams; breakdown showcase Ecnl 3 wins, 1 losses, and 1 tie; Surf Thanksgiving Ecnl 3 wins, and l loss...70% win percentage for ecnl v. 26% for non ecnl.
 
Cant speak for others but I'm not sure if we played an ecnl team this weekend But I know there were ecnl teams knocked out by non ecnl teams.

I didnt look at out of Cal South region ecnl teams, the data was head to head Cal South region ecnl v. non ecnl.
 
03 class is loaded plain and simple.

That's scary. No. 17 stood out to me in the mid-field. They didn't score a whole bunch of goals, but then again, neither did their opponents.
 
Congrats to Surf ECNL winning the top flight of the 03 bracket. There were plenty of good teams to get past.

I am always amazed how well Surf teams do at Surf Cup and Surf Thanksgiving across many age groups.

After watching my daughter's team lose this weekend for the second time in a month to a very strong team, I have been thinking a lot about what, exactly, makes one team better than another. Is it the natural ability and quality of the players, coaching, psychology, or fitness/skills? So I'm curious when you say that the Surf girls work really hard, what that looks like. Three practices/ week? Four? No breaks in the summer? Private training on top of group training? Just wondering if hard work alone can make the difference or if there is something even more than that- something intangible.

I think a lot of success comes down to individual ability. The players potential is enhanced by quality coaching. A lot of people like to throw out the 10,000 hours thing because it sounds good. But the reality is that some talent is just natrual.
