Surf Cup - ain't what it used to be

...for olders and college coaches, this used to be a "must go" event, even up to a few years ago. Now? No longer, especially for girls. An enlightened coach would take a pass and encourage her players to enjoy the beach and take a mental/physical break from the field before school and the REAL season starts up again mid August.

Curious, who isn’t coming that is making this supposedly lesser?
Well, it went from 'Best of the Best' to 'Best of the Rest' a long time ago... but I wonder if that's why college coaches aren't coming (if that's the case).

If that is the case, I wonder how much of that has been impacted by the massive list of names in the transfer portal.

While it's not back to it's grand scale, it's still the best tournament outside of ECNL playoffs and showcases.

There are no other tournaments that are comparable to Surf Cup.

Agree 100%. The draw has declined over the years due to the addition and attraction of national league playoffs and showcases. That's where the scouts are going, although I'm sure there will still be a decent smattering of colleges watching games this weekend. It's still one of the best tournaments around.

Stronger Teams in Texas, Colorado, and Georgia used to make annual appearances. Not anymore. The ECNL showcases and playoffs consume the travel budget. Surf Cup has become “The Best of So Cal”. Hawaii teams still make the trip because they don’t play in ECNL or GA.
One could say the same for the coaches—lots of local college coaches but less from outside of California.

That makes some sense. Plus, why travel all the way to So Cal just to lose?😉 Still has at least triple the amount of coaches on the sidelines than I have seen at any other tournament or showcase. Not saying it has a better turnout than ECNL Playoffs by any strech, but if your in the Southwest its hard to find a better voluntary event to attend. As much as people hate it "The Best of the Best," and "The Best of SoCal" is the same thing.

They should be in Cabo like me, chillin' like a villain...

Curious how the Surf Cup referees have been this year? I heard some players at the Wave game sitting near us complaining about the “lazy refs” “refs that forgot their cards” “I didn’t see any cards issued” “my ref just stood in the center” “the ref was on his cellphone while we were playing”. The San Diego referee associations were not involved for the first time in Surf Cup history. I head from a couple refs that Surf Cup wanted to cut the referee fees so the SD associations chose to support the referees and not assign this year. Surf Cup had to go to OC and Riverside to find refs.

terrible refs every game....bad calls to no calls against both teams. shame on surf for not valuing refs. surf cup always had good refs

Rumor is that an email went out to referees to limit Cards - due to "not wanting to ruin it for all of the money parents and families have spent and the recruiting opportunities" - if true, we are potentially putting our children in danger - I wonder if it translated to more injuries/scuffles or not?

Refs were subpar for a Surf up Tournament for sure. Good on oour local association for refusing to bow to Surf's horrible fees. We got what we paid for this weekend. I watched a young adult in good shape reffing from at most, 10 yards away from the center circle in a U19 game. Play went to the corner away from the AR side, and he still was 30-40 yards away. ARs not holding their lines. Our center yesterday was using his yellows, didn't too half bad, but his AR needs to recert on when the offside position is judged. Horrible decisions by him. Also waving for fouls in areas in the field way outside his control. Yikes.

Hopefully Surf learns a lesson and pays us what we are due. HAHAHAHAHAHA, that was funny

The CR for a high level professional game will run 10K or more. There is less sustained possession in youth soccer so not sure what the number would be for a youth game. Not possible to do the number of games the refs do during a tournament and expect the same quality as a league match. In the same way, the kids quality of play is worse in tournaments because of fatigue.

I can do 2 centers and 2 ARs in a tournament day, staying close to play the whole time, on my line as an AR. Them needing the refs to do more games than that just means they had less refs than the local association could have easily provided. If the refs only had 3-4 games total, then not keeping up with play is a disservice

David Gerson, the referee mentor on insta, posted today that there was a large fight with the boys olders. From what he says, the game was getting out of control. Surf cup instructions are to be lenient in carding because the families pay a lot and 2 yellows and you have to sit. 2 players on the weaker team (down 2-0) were injured and so the ref started pulling cards. Apparently carded the opposing coach for complaining. The players then began to assault the referee and punch him. A second referee stands in the way to protect the first referee and gets his fingers broken. Parents, players and coaches then went after the referees. He doesn't say the teams involved or how it ended (i would hope it was with police involvement, ejection from the tournament, and banning from surf cup). Anyone have details? Seems really bad.
