Santa Monica Surf is now Albion Santa Monica

For their 2011B, there are only 11 teams in the state that are stronger, 9 of them MLS N and only 2 ECNL teams. But that's the club's strongest team (by age), and the rest aren't as close to the top.

ack! The ranks were correct, but I must have pasted in the # of CA teams accidentally into the second table. Here's the corrected table for # of CA teams and percentile:

They have the same issue that there's a talent drop off when letter league starts because they don't have access to MLS Next or ECNL. For Exhibit "B", see the expansion the Bulls have undertaken since getting MLS Next v. where they were before they had access to MLS Next.

Great organization. They field top youth teams in CA before the kids start peeling off. And they do that WITHOUT the recruiting advantages of the MLS/ECNL clubs. (Their last two U13 teams made it to the EA National Championship game.) The Albion move lets them add to their youth talent pool with an MLS Next recruiting appeal that didn't exist before.

That’s the same thing the change to Surf was supposed to do…

I've never had the impression with Surf branding that there was somehow a tie to SD Surf and its ECNL teams.

The press release announcing Albion Santa Monica at least implied there would be some partnership between Albion Santa Monica and Albion Los Angeles and its MLS Next teams. If someone saw a direct reference that there was some partnership, then I must have missed it.

And I concur with what others posted in this thread: Santa Monica Surf usually puts out good teams.

Why? (honest question. I don’t know any of the politics, background or whatever involved. )
There has been years of discussion here on the history of all the little surf offspring throughout the western US getting no visible support from Daddy Surf except perhaps a discount on uniforms. Should Daddy Surf be expecting some sort of loyalty in return?

they're strong every time we play them. Not sure what the name change represents, but it's a strong club.
It's all relative. On the boys side they have 2 top teams in the top 100 nationally out of 11 age groups. On the girls side they only have 1 top team in the top 200 out of 11 age groups. Depending on where one's coming from, and looking up or down, they might consider this to be either comparatively strong, or not so much. On the boys side, they show #221 nationally, out of 1,893 total clubs, ranking by top team performance.

As far as I'm aware, there is no visible discount on uniforms. They are instead marked up quite a bit, and the difference between the cost to the local club and the cost to the parents is used to get "free" merchandise for the coaches.

Of course PR is gonna PR.

"Santa Monica Surf joins San Diego Surf, OC Surf, LA Surf and Murrieta Surf, in the Southern California region to build an elite development program for Surf players and coaches. This Surf alliance will have unmatched access to top-level programming and network resources. LA Surf, which offers both ECNL and DA programming, will be a direct conduit for Santa Monica Surf athletes to play at the highest levels of competition and achieve increased exposure."
