Registering in top bracket for big tournaments

For Surf cup SD (July) and Club America SD (May) do teams have to apply and be accepted into the top bracket? Can new teams be accepted in the top bracket? What makes the organizers decide to allow it or not? I believe for Copa Americana if you are a new team you can’t do the top bracket. Is Surf Cup the same ?

Each tournament is different but usually the tournament director decides which team plays at what level.

The tournament director will know which clubs and teams can compete and which teams will get blown out. You can also track this using the rankings app which should give a general idea which level a team should be placed.

Where it gets interesting is when the tournament director is also involved with the club that's hosting. In this situation you might see some favoritism to the host club teams. But even if they get a cake walks to the finals eventually they'll need to play quality competition.

Also clubs can ask to be placed in a certain bracket. But ultimately it's the tournament directors responsibility to honor it or not.

In your application, you need to state your team's qualifications:
-where your team placed in the table of the fall league
-major tournamnets (such as State Cup, previous Surf Cup) your team entered and results

A big club's first team (SD Surf, Strikers, TFA, Albion, etc.) almost always gets a spot. XYZ Surf's also have a better shot due to their Surf affiliations.

Something else worth calling out. If your kids team gets placed in a 2nd 3rd whatever bracket or grouping you don't feel is justified just annihilate every team you play in that bracket. I'm talking 8-0 or more wins. Also win the bracket.

This is because the one thing a tournament director doesn't want is a team that is clearly in the wrong bracket. It makes them look like they're playing favorites and it makes the tournament look bad because competition could have been better at higher levels.

You'd think that would make the TD concerned that they bracketed incorrectly. Sadly, I'm not sure they'd be concerned much at all - unless it could be shown to their satisfaction that the bracketing has/had anything to do with # of apps/teams the next year.

The tournament director uses your team's past year record to place you in the correct bracket. "Correct bracket" is relative, as it depends on who else has been accepted to the tournament. You can request the flight when you apply, too. Club America Cup's registration date has passed and schedules are already made, but Surf Cup is still open for application.
