A majority of Americans – 63 percent – said in a new poll that the nation is headed in the wrong direction.
Only 28 percent of respondents in the
NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released early Sunday said the nation is on track.
NBC News noted that the percentage of Americans who think the U.S. is on the wrong course is tied for the highest since Trump took office, while the percentage who think it is going in the right direction is the lowest during Trump’s presidency.
Some 68 percent of Americans polled had negative answers – such as “disaster,” “divided” and “downhill” -- when asked how they feel about the state of the U.S.
Just 17 percent provided a positive word or phrase, pollsters found.
Trump’s job approval rating in the new survey was unchanged from December, with 43 percent approving of his performance and 54 percent disapproving.
The NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll of 900 adults was conducted Jan. 20-23, before the end of the partial government shutdown. It has a margin of error of plus-minus 3.3 percentage points.
