MSA merges with City SC Temecula to make City SC Southwest

This is big news in the Temecula Valley. I think it's best for Temecula. Fewer clubs means less dilution of talent and stronger teams.

Here is the post from MSA's IG page.

Exciting News: A United Future for Soccer in the Valley

After 12 years of growth and evolution, MSA is taking the next step to better serve our players and community. We are proud to announce a merger between Murrieta Soccer Academy (MSA) and CitySC Temecula, Menifee, and Lake Elsinore, creating a United club to provide unparalleled opportunities for all players in the valley.

This transition reflects our commitment to putting players first. By combining resources, increasing the talent pool, and fostering healthy competition at every level, we aim to elevate the soccer experience for players of all abilities—from recreational to elite competitive programs like MLS NEXT and GA.

Our mission remains the same: to offer development pathways that lead to lifelong enjoyment, college opportunities, and professional ambitions. While the name changes, the values, programs, and dedicated coaches remain.

Let’s come together as one united club, shaping the future of soccer in the valley for generations to come. We’re excited for what’s ahead!

Regarding logistics, it will be hard to join the best players together. It will be a hosh-posh get-to-know-each-other-on-game-day type of scenario. I bet Fields are a problem for both. Now add the stress of kids being moved to a 2nd team since they did not 'make the cut'. It is going to be interesting to see this unfold.

Not sure what I think about this. Agree that there is too many clubs in IE. It does need to consolidate. Kind of weird that City SC is going to have 3 GA teams in the Southwest bracket, all playing against each other.

IE doesn’t have too many clubs, there should be a GA club closer to Rancho Cucamonga. Maybe give it to fury? Rebels IE? There should be options to only choosing between Legends and Sporting for a higher level showcase league.

Good time to move teams around if the age Matrix is changed by US Soccer.

The merger means the Murrieta teams will have access to 11v11 fields in Temecula and Lake Elsinore for games.

Currently Murrieta teams play at Galoway Downs.

Why would they give up GA in the area so it can move north up to Cucamonga? How would that benefits the IE player pool and what would that accomplish? And why should legends and sporting be the only options? IE doesn’t have to many clubs but should only be able to pick between to clubs to play at higher level? I’m not understanding you on this one.

Being an IE resident, most of us are traveling to great park, Huntington Beach, Newport, LA or San Marino for high end teams for those who aren’t happy with Legends or the mess that is now sporting ca.

For the last 4 years we’ve traveled from the IE to Orange County due to the only options being Legends (the puppy mill) and sporting ca (the total dumpster fire). Don’t think we haven’t tried these clubs. There’s just needs to be another option to keep these two honest. And don’t get it twisted, there’s a lot of IE traveling to LA and OC. Don’t think OC is where all these kids are coming from.

As an IE resident I can confirm this is spot on!

On the boys side, I don’t think this is immediately good.

The main problem I see for boys is that MSA was the only club local to Temecula/Murrieta that has/had access to a higher league (EA/MLSn). What we needed was for one of the other clubs to step up and compete at that level. Surf with e64 or City with ea2 doesn’t really do it.

Those clubs have been bleeding enough of their best players to MSA or clubs outside of the Temecula Valley (Norco, SD, OC) that their teams in my kids’ age range (10-14) have mostly been kicking around SoCal flights 2-3.

The only way I can see this being an improvement for boys locally is if SC starts running it more like I’ve heard some other clubs do, with opportunity for kids to be moved up or down on a consistent basis based on how they’re performing in games and training.

I could easily be wrong, as I’ve only been in the club world for 1.5 years now. Hope it winds up great.

This is defo not what it looks like.

There isn't enough talent in the area for two high level clubs. The merger increases the player pool and for MLS and EA making all the high level teams stronger.

MSA EA are struggling. Some of them are probably not as good as the City EA2 teams. MSA doesn't have enough quality players to field these teams so they just play whoever they can sign. It costs plenty of money to play on these teams.

A total revamp of ALL the teams would definitely improve them.

Some players won't be happy because they will not make the cut on the teams they were on but the best players need to play at the highest level for this to be fair without all the politics and favoritism that has plague some of the teams.

For your information, the population of Murrieta and Temecula combined is only 2/3 of population of Irvine. Serious lack of talent in that area.
It’s a joke to even have a mls next team in that area.

Puppy Mill and Dumpster fire clubs still going on in the IE I see. What a mess.

I live in Murrieta and work in Irvine, so I'm well aware of the differences in population between the two areas.

It's amusing that you quip 'Murrieta and Temecula combined', because the two towns are obviously one area when it comes to team formation once you hit club. No one in Temecula isn't sending their kid to play in Murrieta because it's Murrieta. It takes 15-20 minutes to get from south Temecula up to MSA's fields. There are families sending their kids down here out of Hemet, Moreno, Elsinore, etc as well. So, yes, there are fewer people here than in Orange County, but still enough that I think you could form a solid club with the right infrastructure.

In this thread, you have folks talking about kids leaving the IE to go play elsewhere. I don't think the problem is lack of talent. I think it's not keeping the talent here. In my limited circle, I know of kids traveling to Norco, LA, OC, and SD to play on higher level teams, just in the 2014-2013 ranges for boys.

Maybe Mosafie is right that it's better to consolidate as much as possible. I think my mind has been changed here.

Have you heard of a kid from OC traveling to Murrieta for soccer? I assume no. You can consolidate to one team and still won’t get five 99 percentile players on the team. Talent is just a function of population size. The more people you have the more exceptional players you will have. You can look up populations of cities surrounding Irvine. Lake Forest is one Murrieta, Tustin is one Murrieta, Costa Mesa is one Murrieta, Aliso Viejo is another Murrieta, all within 15 minutes of Irvine.

They can pull from Riverside, Perris, Moreno Valley, Hemet, Corona and Escondido. All are within driving distance.

They are the only MLS team in the area.
