Club refusing to release player

As Eagle33 has stated. The Clubs can not stop you from moving to a different club between the end of State Cup and July 01, paid or not. No release needed. A Release is only needed after July 01, but can only be stopped if you owe money for the new season. Register with the new club, they will get you a new players card, if there is a problem, they will help you resolve it with SOCAL.

I contacted SoCal Soccer League. They said I had to pay the fine, but when I asked about why the Handbook says forfeits are a club fine, not a team fine, they stopped responding to my emails.

One thing I've seen as I've reviewed the club contract and the handbook is that players have very little protection against things like this. Everything spells out player/parent responsibilities towards the club, but not club responsibilities to the players. For the last two months of our season we only had two hours of practice a week because lights at our practice field went out and the club did not fix them and we didn't have a coach for State Cup. There's nothing in the rules that say this is a problem.
If you don't share what Club is treating the players this way, new players will get caught up in their BS. If you are worried about how it will affect your player in the future I get it. No pressure. But this "anonymous" forum is one way we can help out the other players and parents when we take a break from stirring the pot with each other about "leagues."

Do the right thing. Pay what you own then move on. Regardless of the situation why burn a bridge over a few bucks. If your selfishness was the reason for the forfeit you should also apologize to everyone you let down as well.

You will have no problem joining a new club this summer.
If current club really wants to get the money back, they have to go thru a collection agency but it has nothing to do with registering for a new club.
I doubt a club will go that far to collect $30-$50 from each parent. They don't want to burn the bridge.
Just remember a club needs players more than you need them. You are a paying customer (unless your son plays for an MLS next academy).

No way you should pay the fine even if it's not that much. The club should pay it as they could not find a suitable replacement nor did you have enough players to play. Parents/players pay enough to these clubs...if your coach quit then presumably use the salary they would have paid him/her for the fine. I would def want to know which club/DOC is demanding this so others can stay far away... Parents need to help each other out and communicate otherwise the clubs have all the power.

My daughter's club is refusing to release her until we pay a part of a forfeit fine charged to the club. We are paid in full on all other charges and 2023/2024 competition is over, so the Transfer Policy seems to say they cannot refuse to release her. Can they do this? The SoCal Soccer League Handbook says, "Forfeits are charged to the club, not the team," (bold from the handbook itself) so can this fine be transferred to the team players?

The forfeit was the last game of State Cup. Our coach quit (with several weeks' advance notice) and the club did not provide a replacement, so we didn't have an official coach for any of our State Cup games and this caused attendance to crash for the last game and we had to forfeit since we only had six girls.

By the way, are the full rules/bylaws of SoCal Soccer League available anywhere?

It's messed up that the club had the coach quit and didn't provide a replacement... and now wanting players to cough up the forfeit fee...

Having said that, I think the team should've just played the last game... I get it. Meaningless game if not advancing and if already leaving the team anyway... But I like to finish off things. Play the game, shake hands, say good luck and leave and don't ever come back :p

Totally agree it's best to finish out a season, win or lose. Teaches the kids commitment etc... Also sucks for the other teams you're supposed to play but now lose playing a game in state cup.

However, it's still on a club and management to properly communicate with a team and provide a plan for them if a coach quits midseason and a team starts to fall apart. Things happen in life, coaches leave for various reasons and when clubs clearly communicate with parents and explain to them a future plan and the need for them to see their commitment through most reasonable parents will listen.
