Climate and Weather

It's how all our reservoirs are in San Diego County. They're basically on seasonal creeks, or on creeks that are barely a trickle, or just some standing water, most of the year. They only flow during rain events Our reservoirs are basically retention basins and have no hydroelectric capability.
Got it. I’m not thinking of arroyos in the flatlands.

I’m talking about hills, and much larger reservoirs. Example: There is a small lake at the base of the Hetch Hetchy power generation tunnel. Pump water uphill into Hetch Hetchy as a way to store energy. Let it flow back down when you want electricity. It would use the pair of lakes as a giant battery.

Sort of, basically dry creek beds that act as rain gutters to fill reservoirs, although they start at a higher elevation and usually have multiple reservoirs on the same drainage as the elevation decreases. We still lose a ton of runoff to the ocean. Typically, they have significantly less environmental impact as compared to damming a freestone river...unless your a big fan of scrub brush. Our reservoirs have the added benefit of providing water to wildlife and illegals on their trek in places that would normally be bone dry most of the year.

Interesting, I thought Dad4's idea was far-fetched, but apparently its feasible. Still illustrates the problem with solar and hydro, that they're so land intensive they can't be built very close to major population centers and require miles of transmission lines. As opposed to a nuclear plant like San Onofre. These projects environmental objections typically have less to do with the plant itself, and more to do with the transmission lines that cross miles of sensitive areas.

The irony of this being cancelled is that environmentalist were upset that the plan called for flooding canyon areas that are home to Bobcats/ Deer/ Foxes. Since these are not endangered species the use of take permits was not an issue and some feared an excessive amount of these animals would be killed in the process.

As far building more reservoirs I'm in favor of that but not near known faults.

I see you're a supporter of Nuclear Energy. What's the long term plan to deal with the radioactive material? I don't trust companys or governments to do what's best when a balance sheet is involved. All you need to do is take a look at the mess Crystal Gyser created.. and that's just water.

Bury it deep. Yucca Mountain would be my solution, but its largely irrelevant since we're likely not going to see any nuclear plants built in your or my lifetime, and the Yucca project is effectively dead. As I understand it, current nuclear waste is just building up in storage containers above ground, since there is no place to bury it. We need to address that issue. As far as not trusting companys and governments, we would have to have extraordinary safeguards and redundancies. In the US we've had a pretty good track record of safety. I never lost any sleep because I was 40 miles from San Onofre.

I should be in favor of hydroelectric since it often creates amazing tailwater fisheries.

As long as compamie profits way exceed the penalties (Crystal Gyser was 5 mil) the bean counters will continue push full steam ahead. Not sure if you were around for the Toyota debate but a club soccer family paid the ultimate price.Toyota ultimately had a recall but too late for some. The extraordinary safeguards built into Take Permits are self reporting so probably not as affective as they should be.

Be nice, I'm a licensed bean counter. ;)

Vogtle Unit 3 started supplying power this year, and Unit 4 is scheduled to be online by the end of the year.

Wat's Bar Unit 2 was online in 2016, suffered a transformer fire, and was repaired and running in 2017.

TerraPower starting work on their first prototype in Wyoming.

Bill Gates is a big investor in this company.
It's a public-private partnership, which I happen to be a fan of, and might mitigate some of the safety concerns that MS has.

Kemmerer is a cool little area with some great fishing nearby.

Private/ Public is probably the best way to go as long as the public part does not have a board that nobody can hold accountable. Then were back to pay to play.

A buddy of mine fished his way up the 395. I tried a few spots below Whitney and was going to try Lone Pine Lake but decided just to hike there instead.

Nice. I had grand ideas of fishing the Sierras hard this fall, but I've got one kid playing football on Friday nights and another dancing at games on Saturdays. Not complaining and its still better than traveling every other weekend for soccer to AZ, LA, SB, LV etc.

Dems...why are they always dumbing down standards?

SALEM, Ore. (AP) — A new Oregon law that suspends a requirement for a basic-skills test in math, reading and writing to graduate high school is being praised by advocates as a way to rethink education standards and sharply criticized by others as a misguided effort that will hurt children’s learning in the long run.
