I participated in my first game in 1957 (or maybe it was 1958 - hard to remember that far back). I ran across a short description of the game in a book in the genealogy room on the 9th floor of the San Diego Central Library, in a history of Waterbury, Vt.

Possession is great, but there needs to be possession with a purpose. Choosing the right opportunity to attack is what makes the game that much more important, how you get there is what is trained through coaches, and watching the game. Kicking with no purpose other than the hope someone can do something or it takes a lucky bounce is what good coaches want to get away from. Long balls, with the right weight and direction, are not bad parts of the game as long as they have that purpose of finding a teammate or putting it into the space for their teammate to get onto it.
Decision making is what separates the top players from the next level, however still at this very early age kids should be fully focused on the simple technical development of receiving the ball so they have a chance to implement the decisions they are making. One without the other just does not work. Learn all techniques. All different types of passes, not just short. All types of control, front foot, back foot, aerial, all finishes, individual dribbling skills etc.
You play possession to move the opposition to create a chance to go forward and score a goal. If you can drag the defending team away from the goal they are defending there is more space to play in behind towards the goal.
Anyway got off topic... It is a lot better to watch the young kids try to play now a lot more than even 6/7 years ago. Not saying it is always perfect and always possession but it is at times and more enjoyable.

We agree! That's because there really is no such thing as "pure possession" as you define it. You are correct that it's a myth! The successful clubs I mentioned all use their own version of possession as a means to an end, which is controlling the flow of the game, manipulating their opponent to seek advantages, and ultimately, creating goal scoring opportunities. No team I know of tries to keep the ball just to keep it without rewards in the "pure possession" sense you mentioned. That would just be dumb.
Barcelona scores 3.1 goals a game in La Liga. Real scores 2.8 and Juventus scores 2.0 in Serie A.
I would highly recommend Tara Parker at Beach SB as an amazing 2005 coach. Focuses on possession play whenever possible, but is tactically flexible when a situation warrants it. Focuses on technical development, teaching her girls how to be leaders on and off the field, and cares deeply about her players. A great role model herself, and seems to be well connected within the broader soccer community.

I would second Craig Barclay at Surf. He has the top 05, 06, and 07 teams. They each play a great brand of soccer.

DS is a very good coach with Galaxy SB. Although if rumors are correct I heard he is leaving his 2006 team who are one of the best in that age group. I hope it's not but would love to hear some galaxy insight.

Ok, resurrecting this topic as league is winding down. I don't care if it's flight 1/2 or silver/gold, I'm just looking for coaches who are trying to develop their players to play a possession style in the I.E. / North OC area, Irvine too. I don't care if they have a winning record right now- I just want a coach who is helping their players grow in not only the fundamentals, but their soccer IQ as well and who isn't a yelling maniac. Do these magical unicorn coaches exist??

I'm definitely not against passion and I agree that kids do need some motivation at times. When I say "maniac yeller" I mean where you come on the forum and you see a random parent comment on the crazy screaming coach they witnessed. We already experienced that this season- it was awful and I won't put my DD through that again.

They exist. Carlos Guerrero FC Golden State & Randy Bowling IE Surf Premier. I could be wrong but I thought FC Golden State was practicing in Azusa (which is technically in the SGV but really not that far from the IE and it is going against traffic. Not sure if IE Surf RB is practicing in San Bernardino or La Verne, but again not a bad drive against traffic. Bowling is more of a yeller when things aren't connecting but you can tell the corrections made on game day are referencing something from training. Guerrero is not a yeller and his teams play possession. Good luck!
