AYSO Ladera. This is how you run a proper tryout.

If your kid is pretty good and just needs to get noticed, just tell him/her to find the best player at the tryout and then guard that kid. As long as you're not too far below the best kid's level it generally works most every time.
That's not a bad advice. And wear neon green jersey helps too.

I am familiar with AYSO Ladera Ranch and have to agree they are definitely the most organized branch (in OC). I have volunteered and involved with other OC branch and none of them are even close to Ladera. I do not know about regions outside OC.
However, tryout is still a gamble. It is true that they have "neutral" staff grading the players but how do you rate them based on 5 minute shooting/dribbling, one on one and scrimmages? Even a few days of full day camp is not sufficient.
They rarely drop/pickup players after the first year unless the player quits voluntarily or other extreme circumstances. This makes sense, though, because you don't want to breakup the team every year.

If any of you would like to join EXTRA team, be sure to sign up the first year it is formed, U8 I believe? or when 7v7 change to 9v9 to 11v11.
After teams are formed, there will be only 2-3 spots/year at the most, unless there is a new team, new coach, etc.
Teams can also be dissolved for any reason (not often by I have seen a few, usually involving the coach) but it happens in club soccer too so this is not a criticism.

Generally speaking, a good dribbler, 1v1 skills will be picked by AYSO Extra. All-star is different and a lot more political.

Club tryout? just like others mentioned, it is just a marketing scheme to gather players, most will be assigned to Flight 3 coach (no assessment). I tested this theory with both my kids a few years ago. They are in Flight 1 at the time. We went to several tryouts, all clubs immediately send offer letter congratulating that your child is ready to join flight 3 soccer club.

Exactly its all about the talent.

AYSO Ladera is solid. Their neighbor who we played with for years was not. One professionally ran as a business should be and the other not. I wish I had known we could play in Ladera as we would have stayed later. We had much success with the extra program. DD moved over to club at U14 to a flight 2 team and her last year as a senior on a NL team. DS moved at U13 to a flight 2 team then next year to flight 1. Very happy we kept kids out as long as we did. Everyone has a different path and what they want out of soccer. We are gamblers and do what we believe in. DS wanted to take break from club his junior year and will be back to the club chaos his senior year. Will see how that goes but it has been amazing to watch his love of the game return and, with it, his intensity.

The opposite is true too. I know some kids that are Flight 3 players but when trying out with a different club, they will get offers for higher flights to fill spots due to lack of new players trying out.

I suspect AYSO Ladera has good players because the families there can't afford club soccer. Just look at how much Mello Roos and HOA they are paying.

There were about 40 kids there. There were stations. When kids were not in those stations, they were scrimmaging. And there were coaches with clip boards taking notes for both scrimmages and stations.
I think for Strikers, at least have some clip boards for your coaches, so they can write down notes. Because if they don't have clip boards, and you tell parents you will sign everyone. Than, we are wondering if you were watching at all.
Not sure which Strikers you are referring to? Is there Strikers in Ladera?
Coach having a clipboard doesn't tell me anything about his/her coaching ability.
