SoCal has released a list of accepted teams. I’m noticing a number of teams who entered flight 1 being granted an exception to play down in the flight 2 state cup (which says is not allowed on the website). https://socalstatecup.demosphere-secure.com/accepted-teams/2021-2022-accepted-teams

more insecure coach BS......this rule should not be ENFORCED it is clearly unfair to all the young kids who are in flight 2 and want to compete for a championship.......let me guess the flight 1 team that wins the second tier event will say they are state champs with no mention of it being state cup flight 2......

Well, I disagree. Its socal admitting they completely botched the flights and are remedying it slightly through state cup bracketing. Also, now that all regions are playing in one flight, the very weak flight 1 teams can be reseeded to play where they would have if there were no regions for league play. Now we wont have any posts about 17-0 state cup games. hopefully
 
It might get fixed before your first game. But definitely bring it to the attention of the league (either through your DOC or directly).
There are a few examples of this in the older groupings too.
 
Honestly, I feel those teams made their own bed here. If they enter flight 2/3 tournaments and advertise yourself as flight 1 to recruit flight 1 players / sell parents you’re flight 1 caliber and then don’t perform well or aren’t a top team, I don’t think it’s fair to go play down mid season. There’s already flight 1 teams playing flight 2 who did this for the regular season (SoCal Elite).

If teams are doing that then there should be repercussions and they need to moved out of flight 1 completely. There’s plenty of ways to test the waters before making the plunge. Sandbagging isn’t one of them and I’m honestly tired of seeing it. It’s becoming too rampant.

if they don’t like that you’re playing some of the best teams in the nation (ie blues, surf, ole, slammers) in your grouping then they should have thought of that before going that route or just take your lumps and grow from it. They also didn’t even have to enter state cup either. It’s optional. That’s $700 less the parents could have been playing abd you could have set up scrimmages to make up for the games.

SoCal and club DOCs / Coaches really need to do a better job vetting which flight they place their teams. I’m also disappointed that we don’t see any CSL teams entering this state cup tournament.

youre using an extreme outlier......there are teams listed that are doing very well in flight 1, winning games and when they lose losing by 1 goal.......
 
We get the same thing in norcal. Teams don’t want to get thumped by a top 10 team, so they register gold/silver. Not very kind to the teams which belong in silver. But it reduces the odds that an Alpine Strikers parent figures out that Woodside is a much stronger team.

Of course, when a top 32 drops down to gold/silver, someone else gets bumped up. One of our groups has two teams ranked below 90, both in the top 32 bracket. You have to wonder what anyone is going to learn from those games.
 
I have Oct 16 and Nov 20 for State Cup but that’s tentative as I haven’t seen anything actually scheduled (location/opponent). ECNL showcase is this coming weekend for some of the 2010s.

This is how brackets would look like if they were balanced using high vs low rankings with YSR data. The average YSR is more contestant across all groupings versus the current bracket system. I know nothing is perfect, but this one makes more sense to me.
