Are you referring to their style of play, which is more direct?
There are 3 '06 girls from Beach that tick all the boxes that were left off the list. 2 that play up at '05 (1 - SouthBay and 1 - Long Beach) and the 3rd plays for SB's '06.
Seems like we have this discussion every year about the kids who deserve a spot but are overlooked.
PS - my '06 DD is not amount those listed above!
What I'm referring to is that maybe they want a more eclectic group of players than only athletes.

Who knows what they are looking for. Only they know. But if you look at those big clubs that suppost to have all the talent, they didn't pick a lot from them. I'm not referring to AS, but the rest. It makes me wonder if there is a correlation with the style of play(more direct) than possession based where most of the players have an opportunity to touch the ball more frequently. I don't know. I'm just saying.
There's always talk about who should / shouldn't be on the list.
ODP is about showcasing, putting together the strongest team to represent Cal South. You won't see an environment based on teaching / training, but more of a scrimmage and steel sharpening steel by just letting the kids play and go against each other.
It's definitely conducive to let the individual flourish and shine, not so much for the "role players".
Regardless of pros / cons, it's a great opportunity for all those invited. Initial invite will cost around $100. Players who make the final and last cut will attend the subsequent camp at no cost.

No cost? That's very...unlike soccer at this level.
I saw 2006 ODP referred to as a "cash grab"in the other thread. The registration fee seems reasonable for two or possibly three days of tryouts (facilities and people's time isn't free), so I figured they'd charge a boat load for the camp.
Is 10/11 years old too young? Idk. Probably half of the girls on the list won't even be playing soccer in five years. I look over at the boys side with Dev Academy and they're moving the age up to U12, so some equality, who knows (yes I know DA and ODP aren't related).
Is this just a "hey, you're special"exercise, or do U12s actually play competitive games?

ODP can be a fun learning experience for the kids. Lots of scrimmages, bonding time but not much training time at the start.
Not sure starting at these young ages 10 before 11v11 is the best but almost every in youth soccer seems to start earlier and earlier.
Selections are subjective and heavy influenced by insiders and coaches, when there is 7-8x from multiple teams and not a broader cross section then scouting was not really through not to say those selected are not deserving, but that's a lazy way to go about things.

First off, congratulations! My dd was selected last year and it was such an honor for her. They send a letter about the selection. My dd still has her letter hanging on her bedroom wall.
The camp (tryout really) was $100 last year and will probably be the same for 2017. We were at Ventura Community College last year, but I think I remember Hoffman saying they would change to Orange County for 2017. I guess they flip flop between the OC and Ventura every other year.
I think the ODP tryout is absolutely worth it for the players. It allows them to be up close and personal with the other "top players" in So Cal. I think the reason that ODP can get some flak here is that they miss some very deserving players every year.
Try to use this selection as a learning experience versus a rite of passage and I think you and your dd will have a great experience.

Ends up costing money with, in my opinion, no benefit to your DD as regards her skills or connections. Often ODP coach use it as a chance to grab players from other clubs. It's definitely cool for your DD to be recognized and she should be proud, but I know several kids on this latest group who will not be attending.
If that was the case, how many players did the beach coach nominated? "1".
I'm sure most coaches would make multiple nominations per team but that's not how this process works.. Jose misinformed you.
Sorry Jose, that's not how this works.. They have evaluators at State Cup that make suggestions/selections and that's how the teams are picked. Coaches don't nominate.

It kinda is, actually. The evaluators ask the coaches, they don't take them all- but this is akin to nominations from coaches.
Respectfully disagree. Maybe thats how it is supposed to be but i know for a FACT that it isn't always the case. Ive seen it up close. A player not on the first list that comes out. A few calls later she's on the selection list. (happens to be one of the best in the age group even playing up) makes the final team. On the list '06 I know fact that there were phone calls. So what it is supposed to be and whats real are different. Like I said be happy for them but it isn't the end all be all at this age.
