Remember so much that comes out of academia is nonsense.

Think about they/them type stuff. White guilt, dei, etc. They all flow out of the universities and in particular those majors that are shall we say, less than rigorous? The type of degree you hear someone getting and the first thing you think is what Starbucks will they work at after graduation?

Weird that the guy that ran two banks and has two degrees in economics cut the middle class and the corporate tax rate, is capping the number of border entries, is aggressively pursuing trade with China of all people, is deregulating business and sectors including mining and oil as well as building new oil pipelines. He's also supporting the US and Israeli attacks on Iran as well as increasing the amount of gdp on defense.

Sound familiar?

Pew Reports has documented this for years. They show a baseline view of D and R of lets say mid 90s so you can see where both are on some baseline issues. Then over the decades they show how far each has moved from that original position. The Ds have moved dramatically to the left. The Rs only slightly to the right.

So today when it feels like the sides are much further apart vs the past it is true..and it is true because the left has moved a lot off their baseline positions.
