I wonder if Phantom Ranch at the bottom is closed too? I've hiked down from the South Rim and stayed at Phantom 3 times in late December early January. It's beautiful down there with amazing side hikes. Bright Angel Creek used to have amazing fishing that time of year until the NPS installed a weir and started killing the trout to protect some random chub. Ignoring the fact that the trout are thriving and the chub are struggling, not because of trout preying on the chub, but because the installation of the Glen Canyon Dam significantly lowered the temperature of the Colorado River.
I wonder how many thousands of children born in tunnels would love to go on a hike.
