Subject: Surf Cup 2025 (Youngers) — Who You Got? 🔥⚽

Just to close the loop on the mystery teams.

- City SC Carlsbad 11g lost 1-3 to Pateadores ECNL 11g. There might be something odd about this team. Maybe it's really not the White team. This would explain the different name.

- NM Rapids Soccer Club - 2012 G GA tied 2-2 Santa Clara Sporting - 12G GA. So they probably are a little better than their ranking. But still bottom half of best of the best. Probably a coin flip by the tournament director about which bracket to put them in.

- Eastside FC - G13 Red won 5-0 over LAFC SO CAL - G2013 Pre ECNL. I guarantee this is their top ECNL team.

What a mess with the best of the best. Back in the day, you had 8-16 teams in 2 or 4 groups. It was Texas, Virginia, Washington, NoCal and a few other states best teams. No confusion back when truly Surf Cup was the best of the best. Now you got best of the best from the rest who were not first best or even second best. Now Surf Cup has third best fourth best of the rest of the other's clubs third team. If you win third tier best of the best surf cup, you can just tell everyone your dd won surf cup and the club and post on their website Surf Cup Champ 2025. No need to say 4th tier champ.

Surf underperformed by 7 goals today (and/or Reds overperformed by 7 goals). Seems like it may not be entirely the same team that went to ECNL finals. But it's still a pretty embarrassing loss for them.

Surf Cup Youngers Standings (G2011 Best of the Best Standings)

Embarrassing? Not. Embarrassing is not showing up after such a game. Which for surf was a 2-0 dub.

It's not a science. Just ask Spain vs England. Or most England's games in the euro...

The "finals" will be the semifinals. And that will be Surf 2011 vs the EJ composite.

I'm not sure if I understand your point - did they not show up and get a 2-0 forfeit? Or did they just lose the game fair & square? Prior to this weekend, that Surf 2011G team lost 3 recorded games in the past 12 months - 2 of them to Koge, and 1 to Beach. This is a much worse showing than any of those, perhaps one of their worst showings ever. Reds should be congratulated on a most unexpected win. It does support the point that top teams don't seem to care terribly about Surf Cup as they once did.

According to Surf Cup rules...

FORFEITS: An automatic forfeit may be given if any of the following
occur:
1. A team is not present and ready to play with a minimum number of
eligible players, an eligible coach, and verified player cards, within
5 minutes after the original kickoff time.
2. A team fails to check in at Mandatory Registration.
3. A team whose actions as determined solely by the referee cause
the game to be terminated.
All teams who forfeit will have the game(s) scored a 0-1 loss. The
winner will be awarded three (3) tournament points for a forfeit.

Also...

By registering your team, you are committing to play all games
scheduled for your team. If your team does not show for a game
without an extraordinary excuse (catching a flight is not an extraordinary
excuse), your team will not be invited back to any of our events. Games
not played will be classified as a forfeit under the rules below. Games
will not be rescheduled due to flight arrival or departure times. ALL
teams are committed to ALL playing games, as scheduled.

Because the score was 2-0 Reds it implies that Surf played and lost. If Surf skipped the game then theres two issues 1st it should have been scored 1-0 (not 2-0). 2nd if a Surf team skipped a game at their own tournamant its a huge issue because this type of action would get other clubs booted from participating next year.

Surf 11's have enough folks on their roster to field 2 squads. Only one squad played in ECNL playoffs - kids played pretty much entire games. There is a massive dropoff in ability from the starting squad to the second squad. Surf Cup is the time to get the second squad their time on the field. As they say in non-profits: "no margin, no mission" -- pay for play is lame

Assuming that is completely accurate (and there's no reason to believe it's not), it does show that the non-starters on that team are collectively 7 goals weaker than the starters. If nothing else - it makes it clear to all the inherent differences with the players that have been given most/all of the playing time, and those that the club has determined aren't yet ready for it. "Fair" is a relative concept - but it seems that the players have been rated relatively accurately in terms of their ability to help a team win games. For the 2nd game, Surf would be expected to pummel LAFC, and instead it was a close win.

Very true comments above. The kids that traveled across the country to play a total of 3 minutes should now understand why. The argument for each individual is always going to be that they would totally fit in and contribute with the starters, but it's too difficult with all the players coming from the bench. And honestly, this approach is a bit extreme. Either way, folks keep writing checks thinking all is good

So Surfs starting 11 are likely recruits and fly ins while the rest of the roster are players they've developed internally or recruited but haven't panned out yet? Shouldn't these players be on the ECRL team? Or are parent/player egos so strong that they'll leave Surf if not on the top team? I wonder how many starters have full rides? (Assuming the the statement is correct and starters are that much better than the rest of the team.)

For me something doesnt add up.
