Surf Cup

How much effort do coaches or players put into the upcoming Surf Cup given that playoffs just finished? Wondering if this is experimenting time for coaches.

I would assume coaches and players are still putting in their best effort as there were over 100 college coaches at the event.

Surf Cup is not what it once was (IMHO).

DD’s team which failed to reach the ECNL finals in VA, participated. Not exactly sure why? As I think most, if not all, would have preferred an extended break.

We had (6) starters sit out as they are coming off an injury or scheduled for another upcoming soccer event and didn’t want to take a chance of getting injured. A 7th starter got hurt on Friday and sat the rest of the weekend.

Lost in semis to a GA team. Coach was talking major sh!t afterwards which was comical. Trying to pump up his players I guess? Our parents (me at least) were simply happy to be going home early.

Depends on the age. Once the ECNL teams have the opportunity for playoffs/finals then from then on all tournaments don’t mean anything. Prior to those years they mean a lot in regards to bragging rights.

With the top ECNL teams in Virginia, it is a good chance for others to shine. Many GA teams did very well this year

Reguarding GA everyone sees what's going on but the ECNL homers that post here aren't going to admit or comment on it.

Thats OK, eventually different teams will meet. I've seen ECNL parents walk away after games in stunned silence multiple times.

I remember Surf Cup being my favorite tournament to attend. "The best of the best" sign
It's still a very good tournamant. Other than the $20 per day parking. All the fields were in very good condition.

Unfortunately ECNL finals and Surf Cup were on the same weekend this year. The top olders Socal clubs all made it to playoffs/finals which meant they couldn't commit to Surf Cup. So what you ended up with was GA teams and ECNL teams that didnt make playoffs. I was a little surprised that ECNL clubs knocked out of playoffs early didnt do Surf Cup. But as players get older two games per day is more and more difficult to do so maybe they decided to just give players some time off.

What you're starting to see is clubs retreating into League events like showcases, etc only. This takes away from independent club driven tournaments like Surf Cup. Which is surrendering more and more power + control to leagues.

I'm sure Surf Cup means a lot to the youngers teams who all participate in Socal league.

The gap seems like it is closing, maybe slowly, but it will keep closing

Clubs still want their kickbacks that come from attending. There's a reason "Stay-and-Play" exists and it's not for us consumers.

I love my bragging rights brother. My dd won back-to-back Surf Cup Championships, when it was a real tournament of the best of the best and only one bracket of the best around the country. Surf Cup is now about the Benjamins, especially for the Smiths and Joneses.

I don't mind paying the fees and getting a Airbnb for 7 days on the beach. We (The boys) don't even go to the games most of these tournaments. Thats mom and daughter time.

I enjoyed Surf Cup this year. The fields in Del Mar were in excellent shape and the weather was pleasant. It's not the premier event it once was but there was still a lot of very good soccer being played out there. On one of the days I saw Catarina Macario hanging around the merch shop. Yeah its all big business these days but Surf Cup is still a very well run event and there's good competition to be found. This was the last one for my older and there's only a couple left for my younger so we're going to age out soon. I will probably miss those annual weekends in Del Mar when its all over.

If teams went to Richmond, I think most good coaches that go to Surf Cup will use it to benefit playing time for a lot of the players that didn't get as much in the finals. Tournaments aren't what they used to be as the soccer world has changed so much. Tournaments are more about playing time and winning isn't as important. I believe Surf looks to win the "last game" if you know what I mean and tournaments are part of developing the experiences needed to win that last game of the season, hopefully in Richmond.
