MLS NEXT IS A FUCKING PYRAMID SCHEME FOR SOCCER PARENTS - The American Dream if the Dream Was a Pay-to-Lose Scam

Okay. Okay.
I thought I was done. I thought I had already seen the fucking worst of this cursed, diseased, soccer wasteland we call Southern California. But no. I had only scratched the crusty, pus-filled surface of the real beast behind it all:
MLS NEXT.

MLS. FUCKING. NEXT.

The crown jewel of the SoCal Youth Soccer Mafia. The final boss of soccer elitism. The Tesla-driving, spreadsheet-worshipping, $3,000-a-season soccer cult made by clipboard-licking dictators.

This shit is not a league. It’s not a pathway. It’s not even a development system.
MLS Next is a fucking prestige LARP for rich parents and fake coaches to cosplay as talent scouts while milking you dry like a neglected cow.

Let’s get into it.

"OOOOOOOHHHHH MLS NEXT IS THE FUTURE OF AMERICAN SOCCER"

LMAOOOOOO.
NO BRO. It’s the PayPal Premium tier of Club Soccer. It’s the blue checkmark of youth leagues.
They slap that shiny black & white logo on your club and suddenly you’re expected to act like you're Ajax Youth. But behind the logo is the same shitty politics, the same recycled coaches, and the same broken-ass system, just now with extra fees, hidden costs, and gaslighting.

They say it’s “invite only.”
They say it’s “for elite talent.”
But guess what?
EVERY KID ON THE TEAM IS A COACH’S FAVORITE OR SOME FLUFFY-HAIRED BITCHBOY WITH A DAD WHO WORKS FOR A LAW-FIRM COMPANY.

“But Franko, it’s about development, not winning.”

Development ?

DEVELOPMENT !?!?!?!?!?!?!?

DEVELOPMENT !?!?!?!?!?!?!?

THEN WHY DO THE FUCKING COACHES YELL LIKE THEY’RE IN A UCL FINAL WHEN SOME 13-YEAR-OLD FUCKS UP A PASS ? WHY DO THEY BENCH KIDS FOR “ATTITUDE ISSUES” LIKE THIS IS FKN NAVY SEALS BOOTCAMP ? WHY ARE WE FLYING TO FUCKING UTAH FOR A GAME THAT ENDS 1-0 BECAUSE BOTH TEAMS PLAYED LIKE THE FKING GIBRALTAR NATIONAL TEAM ?

And let’s talk about the fake-ass “development" bullshit they shove up your ass.

It’s the same exact mid-ass drills you did in high school tryouts. Except now Coach Velasquez calls it a “positional rondo with verticality emphasis” and charges $300/month for it.

“Development” is code for :

"We will slowly suck the joy out of this sport while draining your mom's credit card until you either quit or your ACL blows up."

“Exposure” Is a Scam.
They sell you this idea that playing MLS Next will get you “seen.”
Seen by motherfkin WHO??
A bunch of bored 23-year-old ex-players with USSF C Licenses and LinkedIn bios that say “Soccer Visionary”?
College scouts? LOL. Most of these games are played on back-alley fields in San Bernardino with no shade, no bathrooms, and two dudes vaping on the sideline pretending they’re recruiters from LAFC.

There is no magic pipeline.
If you’re not already on the inside (connected, groomed since U8, or worshipped by the staff), you’re just an extra in someone else’s highlight tape.

Let’s Talk MONEY.
They say MLS Next is “non-pay-to-play.”
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
No bro, you don’t pay to be on the team, you pay for everything else:

- Uniforms? $450 minimum, not including the alternate kits.
- Travel? Pay your own gas, hotel, food, and “team bonding events” at fking Rockin' Jump.
- Tournaments? $800 a weekend.
- Extra private training “recommended” by Coach ? $90/hr.
- GPS tracker vest to measure “effort”? $250.
- Monthly fees? Oh don’t worry, those still magically exist. “Facility access” and “coaching stipends” apparently.

You could mortgage your house to keep up with these costs and Coach still won’t remember your name unless you’re his favorite’s ride home.

The Culture is Fucking Poison.
MLS Next creates a factory-farm mentality where kids are treated like walking Transfermarkt sheets and anything less than perfection is weakness.
If you’re naturally talented but short?
“Needs more size.”
If you’re physical but unpolished?
“Lacks technical maturity.”
If you’re not already molded into a complete player at 14?
“Not Next level.”

SHUT THE FUCK UP.

And then they’ll bring in a random kid from out of state whose dad runs a crypto startup and hand him your spot.

You’re not developing. You’re competing to exist.
You’re walking on eggshells in a black Nike kit hoping Coach doesn’t decide you’re “mentally soft” for asking to take a piss during practice.

Meanwhile, the Players They Worship?
Have ZERO personality.
ZERO joy.
ZERO flair.
Every Next team has that one Coach’s Darling™ who plays the safest 5-yard passes, avoids all risk, plays like a fucking AI, and somehow gets praised for having “soccer IQ.”
Meanwhile, the only creative kid with sauce and imagination gets benched for “over-dribbling.”

They want robots.
They want coach-pleasers.
They want soulless plug-and-play NPCs who call the game “football” and upload training clips with 2022 Metro Boomin bullshit like they’re in La Masia.

Bro. You are playing in FUCKING RANCO CUCAMONGA. Calm the fuck down.

The Truth? MLS Next Isn’t a Development League. It’s a Pay-to-Flex Cult.
It’s a status symbol for parents.

So they can put that dogshit sticker on their 2015 Civic that screams :

"LOOK GUYS MY SON FINNA GO PRO IN SOCCER LOLOLOLOL"

A power trip for coaches.
And a fucking lie for players who think it’s a real path to pro when it’s just the same crusty gatekeeping with a nicer jersey and Adidas collabs.

MLS Next is what happens when you give fake clout to a broken system and let it rot in darkness.
You’re better off playing park scrimmages with ballers who actually love the game than running mindless drills while a clipboard-humping Coach compares you to Busquets because you completed one square pass under pressure.

Final Score:

MLS Next 2 – 0 Your Wallet

I'm afraid that the comparison " LIKE THE FKING GIBRALTAR NATIONAL TEAM" escaped me.

Is that good or bad?

Being on a MLS next costs roughly the same as being on a flight 3 team if you don’t count the travel costs. So yes if you have a kid in MLS next you are in fact pay to flex. Only very few parents get to pay to flex, most are just pay to play.

“Overdribbling”.

Little game theory here. Assuming both players are equally matched, there is no universe where an attacking player should be able to get around by dribbling and score on two similarly skilled defending players (one of them being a goalkeeper). If that’s happening, there’s a mismatch with one of the two defending players. And at the mlsn level, especially once the puberty advantage is wiped away, so are those easy advantages since everyone has gotten to the highest level. You can’t shoot over the gk anymore. You can’t trick the defender with something like a step over. That’s why so few goals at the mlsn levels are just shots from the top of the 18. It’s going to be rare for an attacking player to get free and have the time and place it in a corner where the gk can’t get it. It’s why most of the goals come from things like corners, cutbacks, creative 1v1s, creative dfks, pks and mistakes building out of the back. So the best you can hope on the dribble is to gain some micro space to pass it creatively. If you dribble it you will eventually lose it. And the more times you do it the more turnovers you will be responsible for. Creativity at that level is mostly seeing the creative passing that breaks lines and off ball movement. So in making your case you have inadvertently undermined your position by pointing to the one factor coaches usually should bench you for. And unlike size, it’s one the player actually has total control. Youth soccer is littered with attackers who break into the first years at the higher letter leagues and then don’t perform to expectations because they find they can’t dribble the ball and shoot over the gks head and be the superstar they were on their f1 team. The u13 and u14 ages are where every position (eg the big gk who used to be a truck but now is too out of shape to learn to dive, the striker who could outrun everyone over the top, the cdm who used to hide as a redundant player) fafo. Adapt or die.

Agree, sorta, but it seems to me that there's a balance which is optimal. If no players puts pressure on the opponents by advancing the ball, and everyone plays short, safe, passive passing (which a number of clubs teach), the team will just get picked apart from small mistakes and errors over the course of the game. That is the consensus "professional" way to play (at least from ~5 years ago), but it's also a good way to lose, unless you already significantly out-skill the opposition (in which case any strategy will win).

If I were a coach (which I'm not, but I still give my kid advice sometimes, based on my own experience), I'd advise decision making based on context. If you are the last line of defense, don't over-dribble (in fact, don't allow yourself to even be closely contested if possible). If you're on a break with one player to beat for a quality shot, by all means try to beat that player 1-1, unless you have a better option. Don't try to beat five players on the dribble, but do put pressure on the opponents, and try to make them play on the back foot, to force mistakes and create openings. If your attacking pressure doesn't feel relentless, you're probably either tired, or playing too passively.

That's my opinion, anyway.

There's always volleyball. You get this same gift for 30% more out of your pocket.

Try competitive dance. Its the same cost as soccer but nobody scores which means wins all come down to the judges discretion. (Everyone is paid off) Also the mom's are all failed stage parents living though their kid.
But the payoff for dance are the big college scholarships...oh wait, never mind. I felt like I almost got a raise when my daughter moved on from competitive dance and went to college. Dance is a racket, but I think my daughter had far better training for dance, than my son ever did for soccer. It cost an arm and a leg and the arbitrary nature of the judging was soul crushing for my daughter at times, but getting to watch her dance and cheer on big college football Saturdays is priceless.

Dance also has some potential better ancillary career benefits, if you're pragmatic and/or cynical about it. Even if you're a baller female athlete, the chances that will lead to a high paying career are pretty low (it might lead to a fulfilling one, but high paying is very unlikely). On the other hand, knowing how to present your appearance well (and other things which you would learn participating in dance related activities) will very likely improve your career outcome potential, no matter what that trajectory is. It is a somewhat cynical way to look at activities to choose to do, but that's probably the reality of prospective value.

Also, the volleyball comment is on-point: even more money, and more travel, for the same shit. My kids are somewhat involved in that as well, but so far I've dodged club and the "high-end".

So lets talk money :
Academies you only have to pay if you want to bring the family to attend Flex, Fest, GA Cup, Playoffs.
If your on LA Surf, La Vegas Albion , Strikers, etc Do you have to pay for your son to go? What are cost .
Flight-500
Hotel-500
Food-300
Coaches Fees-500
Tournament fee 150
1950.00 per event?

Just curious if someone can give a truthful breakdown
So 4 events is just under 8k plus 3500 a year to play on that team

So figure 12k to play for a club team in MLS Next (Not to mention family cost )
Im sure ENCL is about the same .

What do non academy teams pay in the area ???

What do non academy teams pay in the area ???
Can give a data point, but would require lots of data to track this across all clubs/orgs.

My son plays for a local city club in westside Los Angeles (not a big name club, mainly just Socal League teams, but they have some NPL teams). He plays on the second tier team for his age group (2011). I pay approx:
- $4000/yr club fees (this includes 3x tournaments, one being Socal Cup)
- $400/yr for kit (this varies, though, cause some years they allow some carry-over)
- ~$200/yr in various other club related fees (eg: ref fees)

For additional tournaments (generally, around 2x/year for his team), I pay per tournament, around:
- $1000 travel (depending on destination, including travel, hotel, food)
- $100 coach travel expenses
- $150 tournament fees

So, all in, probably around $4500 general club related costs, plus around $2500 for additional tournaments, for ~$7000/yr total cost. Some teams do more additional tournaments, some less, so that cost varies per team, with the higher end teams generally doing more, and traveling further.

Your number is about right, but the calculation is a bit different. You have a couple of Flex qualifying games (FLEX League? Not sure the proper description) in Arizona and Nevada. Those are drivable games, but you're looking at another ~2k. Most teams aren't qualifying for GA Cup and National Playoffs, so your number is about right.
