I'd rather have a beer with a Spurs fan than a lifelong City fan that's been following them for 4-years.

Woke up early to watch the USWNT. Hard game to analyze as fatigue certainly played a role as the game went on. First 20 minutes or so, I liked the movement and then we had to grit it out. An individual moment of magic from Trinity is what we needed in the end! Doesn't matter if she is a one trick pony if that one trick is cut in on her left foot and curl a shot in top bin. Reminded me of Robben. In Emma we trust!

I like Emma. Was a tough game to watch, but Japan made it that way by design. They ran a 5-4-1. Just don't know why we did not serve a long ball earlier in the game to break the lines. Dunn's ball over the Japanese defensive backline was the first of the game. Their defense was constantly sitting in a straight line across the field. By isolating one of our forwards and serving a ball to run on would have created scoring opportunities much earlier in the game. Dunn's ball to Rodman was a perfect scenario for her. The first defender was reaching and easily beaten and the second was to deep to make an impact. The finish from Rodman was excellent. TG that ball was given.

I am so stoked for Trinity. I got to watch this one trick pony every week and let me say this, she had a lot more than one trick when I watched. I still remember like it was yesterday when my sweet bundle of joy was playing for the Blues and the great Tad. I shared this before but for the newbies and the new lurkers, I have to share this one-time story. Back in 2016, my kid's SoCal Blues 03/04 team was #1 in the country. No one could score on us so Tad would set up scrimmages to give us more challenges against better competition and back then, Blues was truly #1 in the country. Most of the time we would battle Olivia Moultrie's 04/05 team and we would school them and show them who the boss was. Twice though, because we were top team, he would set up scrimmage with that #1 all-time Bakers squad that had Trinty, Jackson and Turner up top. Then they had Campell as the top GK and it was insane to watch these GOATS school us all the time and rightfully so. We played them and my dd snuck behind the defense as they were napping, and my kid scored to go up 1-0. It's still one of my all-time youth dad moments when she was 12. Coach Baker was pissed off and let them have it. Pulled the defender and the rest was the one trick pony scoring at least 5 tricks. Jackson had two and Turner had three. We lost 10-1.
 
I do like how Emma Hayes has set up the team to play. They have done incredibly well to addresss their opponents. Today Japan had a plan. I didn’t like it because for me it took away how they can play. They are one of the most tactical and technical teams but had a different approach. Yet, they were looking for an outcome. However! Let’s consider the other quarters! Wow! Germany vs Canada. Cra cra! Brazil vs France 16 minutes extra time! Spain coming back from Columbia? Of my!

I mostly agree, but we can’t forget that our careful control of possession denied Japan chances in transition. We also had to be sure not to give up goals. So far I absolutely love Emma’s approach.

I liked the possession, but if something is not working try something else.
 
the focus on posession was good. It was enjoyable to finally watch a US game where every attacking play is hair on fire race to the 18..
A lot of the players looked uncomfortable, or looked like they really had to really show restraint it to stay in the formation.

Long balls or dribble through that back 5 and work towards a PK. You aren't going to finesse little passes through there when there's always 9 defenders in the 18. Moreover, though, 2 days rest and she isn't subbing? Curious to see how that affects the rest of the week.

Honestly, that Rodman shot was fairly lucky. She got the step she needed but the keeper got a piece of it. Just a really well placed shot and just enough pace.

To your point, I thought it was pretty stagnant and unimaginative. One mistake in the back and we lose.

Not sure why she did not sub...she did bring players that can play 2 or 3 positions.

I stated on another post that it was the perfect scenario for her. Otherwise she was meh. I did like the possession because they are able to hold the ball more, but it was slow and repetitive. It's okay to take chances. On another note Girma has been the best player for the US. I love her back there. Let's see what they do today. Playing a team for a second time in a tournament is not ideal.

Let's hope she has more tricks today and is not just meh.

Girma has ice in her veins. She always knows just where to be... just how much time she has, etc. Did the same thing at Stanford. Legit.
 
Its striking how teams have tactically adjusted to the US, Japan & today Germany, to try to stifle them. That said, they are playing really well. Brazil will be a test as they have been very solid defensively, but I don't see the US as being as susceptible to the counter and they are very legit dangerous with the trident up top. It should be a good game, and a great opportunity for a Gold!

Regardless of how the tournament ends, great to see the USWNT players united and having fun on the pitch together. Haven't enjoyed watching the team as much since the 2015 WC. I thought Lynn Williams had a very good game as a sub. Was excellent in the press and with her hold up play. Did a nice job stretching the defense at times. Definitely justifies leaving off Alex Morgan from the roster, despite her contributions in the past. Horan is going to need to get back to her prior standards, if she wants to keep her the shirt beyond this tournament. I think she in particular would have benefited from rotation earlier in the tournament but hopefully the extra day of rest does her well.

What's crazy is that if Cat's knee doesn't flare up, LW ends up only as an alternate. TR has the occasional highlight moment, but LW brings more to the party consistently, IMO.

Horan hasn't looked sharp at all this whole tournament... hoping it's just fatigue.

Brazil will be an entirely different kind of game. Will be interesting to watch.
