European Super League

They literally took a book out of the So Cal soccer clubs model of making their own closed league and it failed due to power of the people believing in merit. Why can’t is happen here? :/

This is America. Owners here have all the power.

Our whole athletic system at every level is based solely on how team owners can make the most money.

It's no surprise that many of the team owners in the Super league are American. They have a money making system in the US and they want to export it.

It's also why American soccer is a dismal failure.

These American owners thought that since Americans are so gullible and run from every new league to new league that they could pull it off in Europe. I don't see this working out well for any of them. Europeans see right through it as the money grab that it is...

Yet the USA puts up with MLS, SUM multilevel pyramid marketing business that only picks teams based on financial contribution to a single entity where teams buy rather than play in to a closed franchise system. We have mcdonald's like fast food franchise soccer in the usa, a lot sold just not qualiity or very good.

People care more about this proposed super league vs any of our domestic leagues in the usa which is really the sad part to me.

I don't see it this way at all. Granted the US has a closed system without relegation but we have a salary cap too. The Euro leagues do not and because of the system is completely unfair to the smaller teams. In the US every team has the same financial resources with which to build their team. They simply cannot buy the best players and win every year. Our leagues are built to play against other teams in our league and no one else. The Euro leagues have "selected teams" (read the 15 for ESL) that are built to dominate their domestic leagues and play against the other chosen teams from European leagues in International competition. These select teams have budgets and resources that only compare to other teams that are built for international competition not their domestic competitors. This completely unbalances their domestic league in favor of having a good chance at International completion. Honestly it makes sense that the super teams form their own league it is just the structure that needs working out. American fans would not put up with being able to buy championships hence why nearly all our leagues have salary caps.

Salary caps right tell that to the millionaire DP's that are out side of that some of which make more than the entire rest of the roster while compensation for a full third of the league earns less than $100,000. This makes it completely fair for the small market teams that can't afford to pay $6m plus for 3 players.

MLS teams are not even real clubs they are not independent they only serve the league, most don't make any money but MLS and SUM takes in huge $$ all the time with the current model.

American teams buy championship all the time, dodgers and lakers with the sky high payrolls. So they pay a luxury or what tax but they are buying better players than the other can. They are buying the best players in case you didn't notice.

It's all easy to see the excuses that american sports need protection or use salary caps to balance competition but is just a fallacy. Free markets with real competition where you have to earn your way and perform to stay and not just buy a franchise has produced leagues like EPL that people are interested in. MLS not so much.

Two words.. Manchester City.. sheik buys team.. drops hundreds of millions of dollars on salary.. team wins league.... Simple. If you "earn it" by selling Oil then Man City surely did that. In 2008 they were a mid tier team without any trophy for 32 years then boom... 1.4 billion spend on salary and they are now champions.
Manchester City: Timeline of a transformation since 2008 Sheikh Mansour takeover

It is no longer sport when the scales can be unbalanced so dramatically based on the money an owner can spend. The difference between what EPL does and your examples of Luxury tax is the sustainability. The luxury tax will eventually catch up. That is why you don't see the same team win every year. Since 2001 (20 years) there have been 14 different champions in MLB, In the NFL 13 different champions, in the MLS 12 different champions. In LaLiga Real Madrid and Barcelona can go on forever. In the last 20 years either Real Madrid or Barcelona have been champions 17 out of 20 times. In the EPL in the last 20 years the big 6 have won 19 out of 20. In Serie A Juventus have won the championship for the last 9 years straight and 11 out of the last 20. Is that what real competition looks like?

It depends on whether you like to watch the world’s best players in a blowout, or amazingly good players in a close game.

I’d rather watch extremely good players in a close game. Especially if you keep the tickets cheap enough I can afford good seats. For me, the MLS model works. I’d even be fine without DP.

Other people disagree. They want to watch the world’s best. Man City beats Aston Villa, again. For them, the super teams are great. Maybe LA will have one some day. The super team fans can shell out $2000 each for tickets when Madrid visits, and cheapskates like me can watch on TV.

Yes that's real competition in a free market.

Real clubs are not bound by a single entity franchise model and can operate and spend like anybody else. Some choose to buy more players and others like LC win the EPL, athletico in Liga are competitve without spending nearly as much.

Let the market decide and teams compete. MLS is a closed poker game with a very high buy in. It's not the world series of poker where just about anybody can qualify and compete within reason..

MLS is a forth banana franchise league in the usa far behind football, basketball, baseball and will remain so without free market reforms.

I see your point but and while I enjoy watching I don't think you can call those leagues fair. The disparity allows the rich clubs to assemble some of the best teams and play some of the best football the world has ever seen. It is amazing to watch, but when I see comments about "earning it" being mentioned regarding these leagues I have to roll my eyes. Granted they do have promotion/relegation those rules do not apply to the rich clubs. As they say.. some clubs are more equal than others and Europeans are ok with that. I think the house of cards that is the financing of Real and Barca is about to crash but due to the extremely deep pockets of the big 6 EPL owners that will continue.

They tried to turn football into soccer
Oh it will happen.

Once the global audience dwarfs the local it will happen. Pandemic is helping that along. These clubs are global brands independent of their respective leagues. If club owners don't have to worry about filling a stadium they will have more power. It is only their dependence on the local fans that stopped this. If the owners could play anywhere and didn't have to worry about fans in seats, only merchandise and broadcast rights they could do anything they like. Especially if the majority of the players are not from the host country.

Agree with this and the Spanish govt isn't going to bail out Real (post pandemic they don't have the cash). Barca maybe if Catalonia gets independence but that's looking more unlikely in the wake of the pandemic. With the SuperLeague idea shot down the question now turns to whether this expanded Champions League fills that role or whether the EPL just begins to supplant it. What's the financial situation of Paris, Bayern, and Juventus?

If they piss off enough of the local fans, they may not have a local stadium to play in, or it would be too dangerous to play there in some places.

Is Liverpool still Liverpool without Anfield and the fans singing YNWA? Would they still have come back from the 3-0 deficit in 2019 against Barca in the UCL if the second leg was played in Qatar?

What would the iconic 2012 "Aguerooooo" moment look like if that match took place in Shanghai?

Yes, it's mostly about money, but it doesn't have to be always about money.

It won't be the same but.. when you bring in the big money its a risk you take. They will pretend to care about tradition and history but in the end its a balance sheet not a connection.
