NPL Southwest

Apparently the NPL is expanding with the Southwestern division. They appear to be mostly San Diego county teams (couple of south Orange County), almost exclusive to Presidio /SDDA. I think that this is a great move for the San Diego clubs. SDDA was formed to give San Diego clubs a local developmental league, and to have the NPL step in and give them a Spring league is a great move. There is a large number of local teams that play in Presidio/SDDA, so from a business standpoint this is a good idea. It also gives all those teams something to do is the spring. What do you think?

At the u17, u19 levels don't recognize any of the teams, looks like a flight 2 or something?

The post season road is going be be difficult and expensive. 3 phased: First the group winners are going to have to play the scnpl ones which have done good in the past. If they get past that there is a 2nd phase playoff out of state in CO for group play where they play ECNL & other NPL teams and a playoff game for all the group winners. After that all 8 teams move onto the finals two weeks later back in Colorado. The well financed and big roster teams normally have the advantage and they will bring in players from DA or wherever to win it like has been done in the past.

Perhaps in a few years will get more popular & completive, have to start somewhere.

SDDA was not started to provide "development." It was a marketing ploy to capitalize on the word "development." Top teams in Presidio use to compete in the top bracket called Premier that was controlled more by on the field promotion and relegation.

It may have been a marketing ploy, but in the absence of the premier bracket, they needed something to keep those clubs in San Diego and out of CSL and SCDSL. Given the numbers of teams that compete in the SDDA, it seems to be working. There is nothing wrong with promotion/relegation, it should always be applied.

Wait—so this is different from NPL West?? And it looks like a level below? So the hierarchy is DA-NPL West-NPL Southwest??

why not just have NPL West gold/silver or flights 1/2??

there are three NPL divisions in southern Cal. West, SoCal, and Southwest. West is a closed league for clubs with DA teams, Southwest and SoCal and southwest are open. No idea why they don't have flights. But NPL SoCal is older than NPL west, which is fairly new.

so are NPL West and NPL SoCal basically the same level just geographically different? Or are they competing leagues? (If so—why would NPL want this? Don’t they control their member leagues or???)

There is a loose hierarchy for what usclubs calls ENPL which is made up of ECNL conferences and NPL's

ECNL is what they consider the top tier. In general top 4 teams in each conference get playoff spots

NPLwest is a closed league for academy clubs. They are rated higher than normal NPL and given 2 playoff sports per age group.

SCNPL (LA county) is open and this new SWNPL (OC & SD) seems to be closed. They only get one playoff spot between the two of them so regarded as 3rd tier as far as that goes.

Just think of this as a Spring league for independent or affiliates(Non DA or ECNL) clubs to play in. And to have something to play for (playoffs, national championship, etc).
Better than trying to scramble to set up friendlies every weekend or playing in a disorganized spring league.

Oh, that’s very helpful! So SCNPL is roughly LA and SWNPL is roughly OC/SD. And NPL West is just DA clubs. Thanks!

I don't know what your point is. Albion and Surf both have large numbers of teams is presidio and SDDA. In my experience the NPL west if much less competitive than the SoCal NPL. Most of the second teams for the DA clubs are lucky to compete at flight 1 levels across CSL and SCDSL. I am sure that the Southwest NPL will be less competitive than the SCNPL, but I would rate them equal to the West NPL. (B2003 at least)
